Isn't it through the launcher? If not, you can always use 7th Heaven and download the gameplay mod, there's a bunch of options including that, you can basically disable/enable encounters at any save point. It will disable achievements though in case you are going for those.

Kids these days. Don't know what it was like back when games were meant for gaming. And they will never get to know. Its not their fault either. It hurts my heart to think about it.

I guess it's an old mechanic that seems annoying to the new generation. It's so ingrained in my brain that not having them is weird. Wondering if you'll make it to the next screen or grab onto a ladder without it happening has always been a mini-game itself :lunar2019grinningpig:

It's not that its annoying, I just don't have the time to spend countless hours playing games like I used to when I was a kid. I have to work for a living so most of my time is spent breaking my back at an iron foundry. Sometimes i'd rather enjoy the story rather then having to grind for hours on end just so I can beat the next boss.

You don't even need to grind all that much to finish this game - I once managed to finish this game without grinding once and only battling enemies I normally encounter along the way, so if you know what you're doing, you can easily reach the ending in about 30 hours. Compared to other RPGs, that is incredibly forgiving and generous.

Yeah, totally understandable. I have a few things I'm less willing to put up with over the years in gaming recently for pretty similar reasons.

I remember the first time I finally reached lv 99 and Materia all leveled up (No cheats), back then. Days of grinding haha.

the game is more fun when you turn on no encounters so youre not over leveled

Unless you are playing with New Threat, then you are screwed (I just barely made it to Costa del Sol). Try it out if you've played this game countless times, it's pretty damn good.

More time spent in game = more to love. Il take months to play a good game.

So, is it possible to turn off encounters without mods? It's imo an outdated and annoying design. Ff12 and newer improved it by putting monsters on the map and you can try to dodge them

See, there is an option...but it's currently only in the Windows Store version of the game afaik. No telling if Square'll ever bring that update to Steam.

In my personal case, this is what kept me away from games with these kinds of mechanics. I always adored RPGs for their stories, but sometimes i simply wanted to get from A to B. It would become inconvenient. And we've all had that moment where we were at like 1hp and had no means of replenishing and "BOOM! encounter. Didn't save? Guess you're ♥♥♥♥♥♥ then, buddy."
