Added effect + poison should give your enemies poison status. If you had 2 added effect materias, you could cause poison and death (although it would be pointless considering enemies would die regardless of poisoning).
Poison materia lets you poison enemies, time materia-will let you slow/stop targets. Odin/destruct-Instant death on targets. for example.
If you put the added effect plus odin/poison etc in your armour slot you'll be protected against that status effect.
Added effect+hades lets you hit enemies with multiple status effects at once.
I was just using it as an example, but a bad example. a better example would be pairing something like fire materia with elemental, that would give your weapon elemental damage, so it would do more damage vs an enemy that has a weakness to fire.
The added effect that Odin gives is just an instant Death. That's what "Death" means.
