Noob materia question
I placed the Odin materia in a linked slot on my weapon with elemental materia...is it supposed to induce death on enemies? I also put poison with added effect in the linked slot right next to it. Is this a problem do they cancel eachother out because I have never seen the odin and elemental materia do anything...or am I getting this wrong?

Added effect materia is what gives your weapons/armor an extra effect, not elemental. Elemental only gives your weapon the elemental damage (for example, if you put elemental + odin, you'd supposedly give your weapon the death element, NOT the added effect).
Added effect + poison should give your enemies poison status. If you had 2 added effect materias, you could cause poison and death (although it would be pointless considering enemies would die regardless of poisoning).
In your case, you should pair Odin with added effect instead of elemental if you want to inflict death on your enemies.

Odin is non elemental so it won't do anything. Added effect lets you do a status effect depending on the materia you have linked with it.
Poison materia lets you poison enemies, time materia-will let you slow/stop targets. Odin/destruct-Instant death on targets. for example.

If you put the added effect plus odin/poison etc in your armour slot you'll be protected against that status effect.
Added effect+hades lets you hit enemies with multiple status effects at once.

Thanks guys the help is really appreciated I played this game when I was 12 but I never realized how deep materia goes. What is the elemental materia for then? Still confused on its purpose.

Whats the Death "element"? Like a critical hit? And the Death "added effect" is the death timer?

oh there isn't actually a death element in this game
I was just using it as an example, but a bad example. a better example would be pairing something like fire materia with elemental, that would give your weapon elemental damage, so it would do more damage vs an enemy that has a weakness to fire.

The added effect that Odin gives is just an instant Death. That's what "Death" means.
