Yes, it's completely optional, you can just guess until you get it right, but if you get it on your first try you'll get a good prize in addition to the Keycard you need to progress.
The prize gets worse the more times you fail to guess the password correctly too.
IT IS OPTIONAL.
As the whole point of the puzzle is to make you think about it a good while and try to figure it all out before you answer, but if you can just brute force it by trying every option possible then it's definitely an OPTIONAL puzzle.
What's the puzzle if you can simply try every answer with no real consequenses!?
You can literally just keep guessing the correct answer until you get it right, with the only penalty being -as I previously said- that you'll get a less desirable prize (along with the keycard) the more times you fail to guess it.
Each of the 4 libraries has a plaque on the door telling which kinds of books are to be found there, inside, there is always 1 book that doesn't belong to that session, in each of the 4 libraries, the number in front of the book name points to the position of the letter you need to take note of, If the word is "Planets", for example, and it has #5 before the book title, you have to get the 5th letter of the book title, which is "e".
Having at least 3 letters discovered already most likelly give away how to solve the puzzle.
Sheesh.
After reading through that I can only conclude that you must be one of those who love the smell of your own farts.
You know, I was merely guessing before, you didn't have to go out of your way just to prove me right.
