Report a translation problem
Use the PageUp (PlayStation L1) and PageDown (PlayStation R1) buttons in conjunction with the left and right directional pad buttons to do sharper turns while snowboarding.
This should help you maneuver the snowboard much better.
You can also slow down a bit if the snowboard is going too fast by pressing back on the directional pad if I remember correctly.
And finally, don't fret about it if you end up hitting the walls, trees, snowballs etc. a few times along the way, we all do it too.
It's not supposed to be a mini-game to stress you, there's nothing on the line, you don't need to be perfect at it, just fool around with it, do a few jump tricks, try to get some balloons and laugh about it.
