Cant run away from battles?

when im in battle and press page up and page down at the same time my characters do the running man motion but i cant actually escape the battle? How do I fix this? thx

What, I didn't even know you could retreat battles in this game, and I literally strained through this game without doing it once lol

im reading that you can do this in every FF game so Im trying to figure it out for this one lol

You hold [Page Up] and [Page Down] and then you must wait for it to happen, behind the curtain the game is calculating your chances of sucess in escaping (think of it as the game throwing some dice to see if your lucky, and it will continue throwing the dice until you're sucessful).
Some times it takes more time and other times it can be quick (also make sure you're not taking any actions, because if you are you're just reseting this process), I'm not entirely sure but I think you'll have to wait more the tougher the enemies are, but overall the time it takes for it to work is all in the draw of the dice, so to speak.

Oh, and of course be mindful that you won't be able to escape all battles, some types of battles can't be escaped, like when you're fighting a Boss or get caught in a battle where you're surrounded by enemies on both sides.
When you're in one of these types of battles and try to escape the game will show a message on top saying "Can't Escape", so you'll know you can give up on trying to wait for escape.

hmmm okay. Im guessing when Im unable to escape it will say "Cant escape!" or something to that effect?
