Need Internet to play?
From what I read, there are 2 things that require to play this single player game:

1/ Internet connection.
2/ Connect to Square Enix server.

If 1 of these 2 down, you won't be able to play this single player game.

Yes. It's a crappy way of doing DRM. What if lets say the Square Enix server goes kaput, or the company goes bankrupt? Then what?

Either way we have to deal with it. I just with SQE did a better job with the porting. They supposedly "misplaced" the source code for the original version, so the PC port has issues.

You only need to be connected to the internet when you first register with SE & make an account.
After that you can play this game offline, you don't need to be always online for it to run.

Can someone confirm this? I will have this game on laptop without Internet connection.

I can play this offline when I'm travelling with no internet. Just disconnect from your internet connection & 7 should still launch.

Like I said make sure you've registered to SE, link your steam & SE accounts together as well. Also disable Cloud saves, they sometimes can wipe your savegames, happened to me before.
