It's a little overwhelming but the build recommendations the game gives help a lot early on and are viable throughout the game even though if you get into hardcore raiding or PvP later you'll want to change them to something more cookie-cutter.
For what it's worth my main was a Warrior because they have 4 different tanking souls and I love tanking so I kind of deviated in that direction due to the possibilities.
Warriors are typical but also have a ranged build that includes a self-heal and nice buffs that's a lot of fun.
Clerics are all around great.
Rogues are really great too with fast DPS, cool pets, and guns and arrows. :)
There's no way really that you can go wrong and as you play you will see how the different classes and builds work and you'll find the ones you like most.
I personally like the warior (tank with shield type) and the rogue (with pet) most.
