Good classes for beginners?
What classes are best for new players?

Honestly, all 4 archetypes (Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Cleric) have a mix of simple and more complex mechanics since each archetype has several souls to choose from that you can mix and match.

Also pretty much every archetype can play just about every role in a group now - so if you want to tank as a Mage or heal as a Warrior, you can.

So it really comes down to style - do you prefer to play a Mage who can nuke, heal, tank, etc. - or is a burly Tank who can do the same thing in different ways more your style?

So far my favorite tanking is with a Rogue, but aside from that I greatly enjoy my Cleric as a Healer and DPS. Bard support is a lot of fun, and I've read that the new Cleric soul plays a lot like Bard so I'm looking to give that a try.

Everyone likes different things - so go for what appeals to you and try different souls to see which you enjoy most as whichever archetype you choose to start wtih. Have fun with it!

Like said above. You don't need to worry about any "preferred" class to use.

I'd say pick the one that looks the coolest to you and then design something that fits your likes and needs.

Every soul (class) in this game can be all roles. IE: Tank, healer, dps or support.

Tank - takes all the damage and keeps enemies off your group.

Healer - heals the tank and whomever else takes damage

DPS - kills stuff

Support - helps with healing and killing and buffs (makes the group stronger)

Although Kelson is technically correct unlocking the first set of 4 extra souls will cost you about €20 and unlocking the second set (such as the mage tank) will cost you about €30.

If we take away these premium souls then the cleric is the most flexible class; it can Tank, Heal (3x), ranged dps, melee dps and solo with pet. The other classes are limited compared to Cleric:
Mage: Has no tank and only a single heal spec.
Warrior: Has no heal (and kind of bad at solo imo).
Rogue: Has no heal.

True story.

Thanks on elaborating.

The Cleric is what I roll with and is my main. I don't have alts in Rift.

I use Cleric Sent to heal and Druid for soloing.

All the classes can be good for what you need. The ones i had good leveling time with was any of the ones with pets. Just starting out and having a pet is not a bad mix. Some of the pets you get can tank, caster damage or just dps. One of the things i did that helped me out with rift starting out was researching the ones i might wanted to play. In the end most of the classes have a base one then can learn other roles. If your still wondering look at mage for necromancer , rogue ranger with pet , warrior for beastmaster just to give you some ideas.

Best leveling specs ususally have some sort of self heal. Like the mage harbinger, the Cleric druid (that also has a tank pet or caster) and the Rogue tactician.

That is also a good thing , having self heals helps greatly ,

i personally started as a rogue ad I've done pretty well, you can use both ranged and daggers and you can always upgrade your skill tree to get heal effects (i'm pretty sure), and the rogue class also can have a pet boar hound, to find this you sort of have to play around with the different skill trees and what they do for you, i prefer daggers over a gun unless my opponents down a hill or above me so i upgraded that more than my ranged ( i put a couple points in ranged just to be sure), but it all depends on how you want to play the game

In the endgame you will realize that most content requires you to be a ranged dps. Simply because there is only 1 bard on a 20 player raid and melee makes things unnecessarily more complicated. Therefore you will most likely end up playing marksmen all the time, unless you become a tank.

I have had more fun with mage (chloro healer, fire or lock dps and archon suppport) and cleric (inq ranged, shaman melee, tank, defiler support and purfier or warden healer). Warrior had similar issue as rogue although melee warrior is generally more accepted than melee rogue.
