If you enjoy playing Rift, buy a Rift Game Box in any Edition you can find online for a few $.
Add a Nightmare Tide Typhoon or Infusion Edition (k.i.n.g.u.i.n-n.e.t have a few cheap ones...) to it.
And you are all set up.
The two soul packs (Storm Legion and Dream) can be obtained with ingame currency from a "shopseller", just play for it.
Same goes for at least the NMT Typhoon Ed, if you want to save a few $ here.
Hint to finding a shopseller, first make sure that the shopseller is level 65 and has decent equipment. That he is also in a good guild, and that he is selling shopitems on a regular basis.
Overall it should show, that he cares about his character...
And allways make the deal clear in the chat, and be precise on the terms, how much plat. for what item, and make sure that he agrees to it.
From there it's either plat. first and then comes the item as a gift with ingame mail, or the gift comes first and then the plat., it all depends on the shopseller.
This might take a while to find a good shopseller, but that is better then getting ripped off.
You might get geared up faster, but nothing else. Everything can be bought ingame with REX and is quite simple to get them.
New souls are cool to have, but not a necessity. If you like raiding, you're probably going to need them, but that's just some grinding for plat and you'll get there.
Levelling can bit annoying if you don't like questing.
Most people will turn to Instant Adventures, Dungeons and Wafronts.
The game is cool is you like questing game, with no open pvp and are focused on either raiding or playing with cool people.
There are perks to buy, such as the Nightmare Tide collectors edition(s) and the soul packs though.
For a new player enjoying the game, I would wait until you near level 55-60 before making purchases there unless you want one of the souls for soloing purposes. Once at 60 it makes your life a whole lot easier to buy the Nightmare Tide, the cheap one will do unless you want fluff that CE has, to unlock the earring slots and the ability to equip some quest gear and drops.
Basically most if not all the items that you must pay for with real money are cosmetic items that do not do much. The game holds various "World Events" that allow all players to participate in and potentially obtain special items, such as mounts, costumes that do literally nothing but look nice, and companions that also do nothing, but hey, you just got a tiny reindeer to follow you around as you kick butt.
However, in order to use the auction house, you need to hit a certain level of "Loyalty". All I did for that was pay $5 for credits, and that was that. REX costs so much that by the time you gather enough money for it, you could have gotten loyalty points by other means instead.
Yes, you will pay a bit more, but in the long run you will also get a lot more out of this for your whole account, then with just buying some credits from the Rift Shop.
