New to Rift
I chose the mage class but it gave me a list other things to pick from, like flamecaller and gravelord, ect. Which one would be best for DPS mage build.

Thanks!

those are just preset paths that are actually outdated now. It would be better to pick your own path,
This video should help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heWgmBeyzBY

Every role you switch to and activate uses the skill points you have gained seperately.
In addition each role remaps your entire skill bar selection.

For example...I am going to explain using a character i am currently playing.

WHen i started out I chose a rogue and chose I think riftstalker as my role.....once in game i saw things where set to automatic and i actualy didnt like the skill tree combination.

So i clicked on each skill tree and altered them....i actualy choose tactisian and bard and ranger....i think those are the names......anywise i had a blast playing.
Later at about level 5 i too ran into a skill trainer and bought another role.

When i opened my skill screen i foudn the role at the bottom and activated it....it did the same choices i had before so i altered it.....to be more of an assassin....I took the assassin tree...the riftstalker...and blade dancer trees for the role.

Since i was level 5....i was able to choose where to place my points for this new role.

I also had to set up my entire skil bar selection.

Now when ever i switch roles i can go into my assassin mode with its skills and powers or into my bard mode.

I even decided to drag and drop my role buttons to my skill bars so i could switch between them onthe fly.

So now i run around as a bard alot....but when i need to...i can switch to assassin mode which has the ability to go invisible.

So to answer the last question that was asked....no you dont need more skills....each role literally keeps your level....but makes it so you can allocate your entire skill point reserve as you like.

In essence roles let you have differing types of characters as you play.

I had to edit this in: I hope this answers the questions you and others might have.

And if you have not used an ascension code and want the free stuff here is a code that will get you the goodies : Y3JCKKPXTYR6XD6RF6PQ
You can just apply this or redeem it to your account.

If you have not made a character or account yet you can use this link Ascension [rift.trionworlds.com]
