About WoW, the game is well polished, they can produce hype and really good trailers... but i'm done with it, and i don't think, that i will take time to look into Legion either.
Legion will be just more of the same, with probably a few good ideas taken from other games into it.
About GW2, you can't even explore the new areas without paying up first for the new expansion. And i also prefer the Shards system in Rift over that forced "Mega Server" Crap in GW2.
You can easily level doing any/all of your choices there.
Personally, I go with instant adventure up to level 50, do the attunement chronicle and the 'visit this area and meet this person' storyline quests, then dungeons and expert dungeons to 60, then dungeons to 65 lol.
Nid were you in Drunken Huntsmen?
To start ... Rift is F2P, which means it attracts people who have never ever played an MMO before or have an 8:30 bedtime. You are going to end up dealing with a LOT of people who play like they have never used a mouse before ... This can get pretty frustrating when you roll dungeons, instant adventures and pvp. You'll find yourself saying "what is that person even doing ..?" a lot. Granted you run into this in WoW, and pretty much anywhere MMO related, but it's definitely more noticeable in a F2P.
To talk about PVP, it gets a MAJOR don't bother from me. When you have gear it's fun (i guess) but you'll find yourself getting one shot by ..? or crowd control silenced into the ground (a 5 second silence..? for real..? on no DR) I was a 2400 rated disc priest when i played WoW, and i can say without a doubt rift pvp doesn't compare. There's also basically no comp scene at all. This is fine but ... this game is definitely not the place to go for PVP.
The zones are pretty similiar to each other, and this is a good thing in my opinion. They've both got some awesome zones.
Quests are ... MMO'esque... In the sense that there's a lot of "run here, collect this, find this, run over there, run to the other side of the largest zone in the game and then back (portals will become your best friend)" The story/saga quests in Rift i like more in that they seem a bit more in depth with better rewards.
Back on the subject of the F2P system. Although this game isn't P2W (pay to win), it is definitely pay to make your life much less grindy. For a quick example, you can pay money to buy raid gear ($$$$$$), which would normally take you weeks on top of weeks to get. The majority of the in game spending would be spent on upgrading materials for your armors (another thing that takes weeks and weeks to grind) and cosmetic items (most of these can be found in game too with some digging). The urge to spend money is definitely strong, but you can just as well do everything in the game without spending a dime (no paywalls).
Armor and weapons in my honest opinion look cooler in Rift. They look more real/less cartoony to me.
Vanity in this game is absolutely awesome. Like transmog in WoW, except free and much more streamlined. You "unlock" different looks by collecting armor. That armor appearance is then able to be used to change what you look like. Completely for free. You can also recolour your armor with dye, although a lot of these you have to pay for. In all vanity in Rift is a huge plus. If looking the way you want in an MMO is what you're looking for, Rift is one of the best and nicest games for it.
Classes are ... a little weird at first in Rift. Instead of a bunch of set classes like shaman, priest, warrior, rogue, death knight etc there's 4 classes: warrior, cleric, mage and rogue. Each of these 4 classes have a TON of sub classes or souls as they're called in Rift. I can make a Chloromancer mage, which is a mage that is actually a healer, and then switch over to Pyromancer mage, which is a mage that causes damage, and if i don't like either of those i can even switch over a tank mage. Yes ... tanking as a mage ... who knew that would actually be fun. I definitely like the system a lot more than I did when i first started out (The out of the ordinary souls like healer warriors, tanking rogues/mages and the like must be purchased off the store, but there's still plenty of vanilla souls to choose from).
There's a bunch more content i could go into but those are things that come to mind when i think of Rift vs WoW. I like Rift more, but I have been out of WoW for a few years now so i'm not up to date on it.
Rift, you can buy a subscription, but you don't need a sub. to play.
And you can buy new souls or callings, but you don't need them to play through the new content...
Or the highlights from the ascended trove (you can claim one with every character on your account) in Rift:
level 10: purple weapon for your character
level 20: blue mount
level 30: 22 slots bag
level 40: orange weapon for your character
level 50: purple mount, underwater training for one mount
level 60: profession booster (push one profession directly to level 375)
level 65: purple neck piece for your character
and several transcendent potions (160% boosts...), runes, vials, void stones or other currencies.
