Rift does have it's own client that the majority uses through their Glyph app.
This is what ticks me off so much with the Steam community. You folks actually believe everyone plays MMORPGs solely through Steam.. This is not the case at all. The majority of players download launchers from the respective MMORPGs official websites.
The Steamcharts doesn't take those clients into account. So when it comes to MMORPGs, the Steamcharts are 100% useless as only those playing through Steam will be listed there.
From mmo-population.com (which is a pretty solid source of information regarding MMORPGs and their player bases.
Roughly 4874 daily players, with a total player base of 513,042 players.
That's a bit different from what the Steamcharts are telling you, eh?
Stop using the Steamcharts for MMOs and MMORPGs. It's useless for that genre or for any online game that has a standalone client downloadable from their official website.
As with all MMORPGs, Rift has its peak hours, and nope, steamcharts doesn't include players that are using the stand alone client from Glyph.
You'll see other players using the stand alone client in-game, though. Like i said, you won't see those players on the steamcharts.
I've seen plenty of people in-game myself when i've been on, but the majority are hanging out in the main quest hub. That's quite common for older MMORPGs. Veteran players tend to hang out in the main quest hub for the latest content, so you won't see a lot of people if any in the starting zones.
It also depends on what region you're in. Time-zone etc.
Howdy, owner of MMO-Populations here.
So we made an algorithm that mostly looks at sub-reddit information, overall it's the best information we have for many of these games.
I wouldn't call it solid, it's our best guess.
For example we removed Wildstar from our Most Played list, but (according to our algorithm) Wildstar still has about 1000 daily players. Sadly it's not perfect.
I've actually explained how it works here: https://mmo-population.com/about/ :)
It might be an estimate but it sure as hell is more accurate than Steamcharts which doesn't include stand-alone client users.
Can't get a 100% accurate number either way due to the fact that MMORPG devs and pubs never reveal the actual player count unless you pay an insane amount of money to get the information from business platforms they're connected to. The same platforms their investors are using. Though last time i checked, you can't publish those numbers publicly either way without severe consequences aka getting sued to hell and back. In other words, not worth it just to get an insight into their player counts etc.
As for Wildstar, it might have to do with the new private server currently in development. There's somewhat of a hype and talk going on over at reddit. Have to admit, i'm kinda hyped for it myself. One of the best (imho) MMORPGs of this generation that sadly got ruined by an extremely toxic community.
I'm sorry but what you're opening with here is nothing but hogwash..
It may not have the same player numbers it used to back in the day, but it is sure as hell much, much higher than the Steamcharts..
I'm not a fan of Gamigo but, you are wrong.
So yeah, if anyone should be ignored, it's the doomsayers and naysayers who love to pull the Steamcharts card in every single debate regarding Y MMO/MMORPG unless the only client is from Steam.
Also, when using the Steamcharts, people on Steam tend to use the low-tide numbers which means to say that they link the charts at a point in time where people are at work/school etc. What matters is peak hours, which depends on time-zones.
Could always get a group for content and came across players here and there.
Plenty of guilds recruiting.
I just checked again, 12 in Tempest Bay, 3 in Alittu. Not sure how to get a better population figure, but seems completely dead.
If people do play, where are they?
