Worth buying without a wheel?
I've seen Drew from Giant Bomb play the game a few times on their site and the gamepad controls always look so jerky, which makes me wonder if the game is worth picking up if you don't own a wheel.

I own a 360 controller and a Steam controller. Anyone know what kind of granularity and experience I can expect from these?

Iplayed with controller and wheel both with all assists off and the outcome is with wheel its "150%" easier to drive you have more feedback from the wheel it will make you faster too in most cases. with controller after some time it gets a pain to play because its very hard to hold the controller and drive precisely a 50% race is the most i could do with a controller.

No.

They ruined the steering speed with a gamepad in F1 2016. It's extremely slow, you will miss a lot of detail in the steering. The gamepad settings in F1 2016 are by for the worst of all the Codemasters F1 games.

Yep , you can play with a pad just fine ,actually one of the fastest guys in the leaderboard TRL limitless uses a pad.

I play with a KB and the game is still a nice simulation and you get that race feel. Although i imagine it is loads better with a wheel.

Just don't expect to go up against ultimate AI and ace all the tests with a KB or pad. Put it onto like hard or expert mode or whatever you feel comfortable with and the game works just fine.

I have both and I still prefer the game pad. I'm trying to learn with a wheel but left foot braking seems unnatural and I'm still about 2s faster on the game pad. On the gamepad I can win with a season 1 few upgrade Renault and pole on expert but struggle on legend.
Gonna keep at it and have left it set up this time.
But in response to the original question yes the game is totally playable on pad. I would recommend the 360/one pad as they have a better trigger for your accelerator and brake.

So Ive been looking at a wheel or getting a controller, what do you guys prefer? Dont wanna blow too much on a wheel when a 360 controller works the same in a sense

Absolutely once you go to advanced wheel settings and make adjustments. They work for controllers too.

Sweet thanks man. You run a controller?

Yeah I do. I was gonna buy a wheel but the only ones I would be satisfied with cost as much as my graphics card. Go to advanced wheel settings and raise steering linearity and steering saturation to work out the inherent understeer that seems to be in the deafult controller set up. Personally I use 70 steering linearity and I never change it. Steering Saturation I use between 40 and 65 depending on how my setup is and the circuit I racing at.

its definitely worth it playing the game with xbox 360-/ xb1-controller. 170h cannot be wrong. ) have fun.

It plays fine with a controller, especially in single-player/career mode since you can always adjust AI difficulty to make it more suitable to a controller and your ability. You will probably be at a bit of a disadvantage in online racing, although there are plenty of other people using controllers too so you should still have some fun. Just don't expect to win a ton of races online against wheel users.

P.S. It's not even really the wheel that is the big advantage but rather the throttle/brake pedals which allow you much more precise control (especially with traction control disabled)

I have bought my wheel about 2 months ago and i can definitely say that it makes more fun with a wheel, but it is also very satisfying with a controler. So only for F1, i cannot recommend to buy a steering wheel. In contrast to Dirt Rally for example where the gaming-experince is totally different with a wheel.

Finally if you are a fan of racing simulations, you should think about buying a wheel. Only for F1 2016, not really... btw. christmas is next month already....;)
