Tips for tyre wear with a controller?
Hey guys,
I play with a 360 controller (I know, I know) and I've played other F1 games, especially 2013. I'm playing on expert so yeah, I'm not as good as many of you but I'm not horrible either.

The thing is that I've done my first weeked at Melbourne and the tyre wear test seems ridiculously impossible to me! If I manage to stay in purple (or even green) I end up losing like 3-4 seconds and if I go quickly I end up in the red zone no matter what.

I'm driving a Renault, qualified ahead of Magnussen and managed to finish P9. Had 0 problems during the race, doing 6 laps on SS and 9 on S without reaching 50% in any wheel.

So...
-Can you give me any tip regarding the tyre wear test and improving tyre wear in general? (I suspect we controller players change direction much less smoothly than those with a wheel but still...)
-Is it normal to have more degradation in the front left tyre? At least in clockwise circuits like Melbourne. Or am I doing something terribly wrong?

Thanks!

I always do the tyre wear test with mix 3 so that I can make it in time. If you don't stay on the racingline I think the tyres will wear out much quicker.

And I think it's pretty normal that the front left tyre is a bit more used than the others cause if you think of the track it has got many left turns.

Yes, I will remember that. Maybe it is a matter of getting used to the game since experience in others doesnt transfer 100% to the new one. And yes, I have to try the 2D/3D racing line and see if it helps at least for those tests!

That's what I thought but I asked just in case :rlhotshot:

Yeah the tyre wear tests are a pain in the ass but you just have to switch to mix 3 and follow the line and everything should be good :D

Update: the racing like helped a lot! I was probably going through dirty part of the track and degrading unnecessarily.

I can now do green going fast and purple being a bit careful. Thanks!

Yeah best things I can suggest are:
Racing line (I kept losing tyre wear on straights on Spain until I realised I was on the wrong side of the track, the position just felt more natural to me)
Engine on Rich - what you lose in the corners you can pull back on the straights
Dump the fuel - set you car up for a low fuel run so just over 8 laps should be enough (doing this for all the tests and qualifying can maybe sneak you a few tenths)

I've tried doing it on harder tyres thinking they would wear less but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

The problem is the more tries you have at it the worse your tyres get so it gets harder and harder. I suppose this would be one advantage of doing it with the harder tyre.

I've tried too and they don't seem to make a difference.

The racing line is must because a straight in the wrong side of the track can make the difference. After a few tries I did all for purple laps on Bahrain.

I play with controller as well and managed 8 purple laps, 2 green laps on legend difficulty with engine mode on standard.

- Racing line helps a lot.
- Never brake and turn at the same time. Brake and than turn.
- Don't accelerate to the maximum when exiting corners. Even with TC on full, don't go full throttle until you are straight out of corners.
- Try to never steer completely left/right, unless it's a very slow corner.
- Find a setup that's very balanced. While how you take corners matters more than setup itself, it helps a lot when you have a setup that you can drive consistently.

do you play with full tc? you should set it to medium or off. with full tc you can accelerate much faster which isnt possible normally but your tyres pay the price for. ;) check it out.

Yeah, I've followed all the advice and I can already do it (not without paying close attention haha). Out side of the tests, I'm doing fine with my humble Renault!

just a matter of exercising. on some tracks like silverstone i also struggle too with the tyre management test getting it purple but green is never a problem. have fun!

And I guess that (while some circuits offer more wear for everybody) we all have some circuits we are better or worse at. For example:
-I struggled a lot with the test in Melbourne. Started P16 or so and ended P9 with the Renault.
-Very next race. I manage to do the tyre wear tests in Bahrain without an issue, pole position and close win.
-China: again I struggle a lot with the test but it's doable. Then started P6 and ended P4 or so.

But in general it's a matter of getting used to it!

i was able to do all tyre management tests in purple until silverstone. silverstone i managed only green. yeah you are right. which difficulty do you race?

Since I haven't played F1 for a while I think I set it to hard. I will definitely pump it up to Expert very very soon, which I think is the one I used in other games. (As I said in the first post, I don't aspire to be a pro playing in Legendary difficulty :P)
