Is it possible to take this city?
Hello everybody, I have bought the game when it was on sale, and I'm loving it. While playing, I wanted to destroy an enemie's city, but I can't seem to do that, since it is on an island that only has 1 tile. Since you can't attack with ground units from the water, and you can't take citys with ships, is it possible to attack this city? Photo of the city>> http://imgur.com/KYXaVYq

i was actually wondering same thing as its happening on my ancient time scenario... not sure, but very maybe develop a nuke, then nuke it.
You need marine to attack from water.

I dont suppose any of you's know what the point of those fortress units?

Marines are the ONLY unit that can attack from water.
(not entirely true Berserkers that replace longbowman for viking, also can do that.. but thats a race unique unit)

Thats your ONLY option to take such a city.

To kill the units in the city : you can either use some nukes. or bombard (with planes) the hell out of the city.

-landbased artillery and ships can only reduce units to 1 bar of heath, bombers, stealth bombers, plane, jetplane and stealthplane can completely kill units by bombarding them..)

A fleet with 10 aircraft carriers filled with bombers usually does as well a job as nukes, WITHOUT turning everything in a useless wasteland... and hands it over to you free to grab.
Also using bombers does not not give you heavy negative rep.
(use nukes and the world will declare war on you or at the very least be SO pissed on you ANY trading becomes near impossible.)

however there IS one other tactic you can try... : take almost all their city's.. than declare peace giving back some bigger city's but demanding this island city.. (they will hand you any city if you kicked their but long and hard enough..) only their capitol they NEVER will trade.
so make sure that you don't take all their city's or the capitol will shift to that island city and you will no longer be able to trade for it.

Fortress UNITS? no UNIT named like that. Please specefy what you are refering too :

*if you are refering to the BUILDING "Coastal Fortress" it fires at ships sailing between 2 tiles that are BOTH borering the city sqaure (it will no fire at stationary ships)
Furthermore it servers as a first line (if ships fire at the city.. the fortress usually is the first to be destroyed, saving your more important buildings and troops from that faith)

*If you are refering to the TILE IMPROVEMENT "Fortress" : there are 2 levels of it.. the first one improves the defensive value of all units fortified on it by +50% making it a good method of protecting your borders (or coast.. by preventing them landing)
The second one is even better, it improves also, but by +100% AND every unit entering that tile will lose ALL it's moving points.. a couple of these will stop any calvalry/tank rush into your lands.. It will do this even if the tile has no unit of you on it. Any unit you DO station on such a level 2 fortress, will also get area defence (any unit moving in and/or out a tile adjectant to the tile the unit on the fortress is, will be fired upon, without any change of that unit firing back)

If you were refering to some other unit, improvement or building, please list whats the name ingame.. and I'll tell you what it does.
