Multiplayer not connecting?
My friend and I have been trying for about an hour now to figure out just how to play a game together online. We went to the direct IP option and I typed in his IP address but it just sat there counting down from 20 seconds repeatedly. Am I doing something wrong? Please help, we bought and downloaded this game so we could play together and it's just not cooperating at all. I keep seeing to consult the readme about ports and firewalls and I don't know what that even means.

Maybe he has the ports closed. Use hamachi or gameranger to play on multiplayer.

He doesn't want to use hamachi. Also... how do you even open ports? I tried looking but it was all looking overly complicated and not specific to this game.

Tell him to go to portforward.com, use the information of his router and the page will teach him how to open the ports. He might need a username and a password to configure the reouter, which was set when the internet was installed, unless the default password was never changed.
The other solution is Gameranger, is less problematic than Hamachi and it gives a list of servers based on the games you have installed. You can even add friends there and the connections are direct, no virtual network IP's copying.

Hmm... well I can see if he'll go for that. But HE actually found out how to open the ports himself since he's good with computers. I, on the other hand, am an idiot. So I'll see if I can get that stuff to work but... Gameranger doesn't do the VPN thing?
TheDiaz Oct 21, 2014 @ 7:20pm
Yes, Gameranger is a VPN app. Is efficient though, it doesn't give an IP like Hamachi, and you can protect with password the connections and many other features that can be used.

Oh. Well my friend doesn't like the idea of the VPN type thing. He's worried about them possibly getting information from doing that. And it's also not a registered site. I don't know. It sounds like the only way is by opening up those ports but I'm still not exactly sure how to do it.

You should get a medal for being so cool when responding.

They shut down online multiplayer in earlier this year, I think. If you are using LAN, I don't know. I could be wrong, though. (If I am, please tell me, I want to play online, too)

They shut down GameSpy but they announced a switch over to steamworks for this, Civ IV, and Borderlands. The others are already transitioned. Not sure what the hold up is on this one.

As far as I am aware you can still play multiplayer on Civ III. I remember I had the exact same problem a while back, and there is something you have to do, ref: ports or whatever in the computer to allow yourself to play the game multiplay.

I can not remember for the life of me how and what I had to do. Also the IP address thing, forget it, it has to be through MULTIPLAYER then you set up a game, with how many countries, slots you want then your friend or friends go into the MULTIPLAYER / JOIN GAME and they should see the game you are hosting, providing they know the name of your character or name of the game.

Pretty simple really, but I have a feeling you may need to unlock all the ports to be able to do it, and I am sorry I can not remember what I had to do.

Good luck though. Great game to play multi, a bit slow and laggy, but apart from that is the best Civ series out of all of them, before they went all 3d balls up.

Opening ports is super complicated and I don't understand how to do that at all, even after looking it up. So now the options are pretty much just to wait until they migrate the online to Steamworks (which probably isn't going to happen at this point) or to just hang out and do LAN multiplayer, since that seems to work just fine. It's a real shame they didn't follow through on this migration.

You could possibly GOOGLE it?. I know I had someone take me through it on Teamspeak, even then it was a head banger.

I do not get IT and Game companies, why in earth do they just do not make everything compatible is beyond me. Stressful aint it, gaming and IT in general.

Best game since sliced bread Civ III and they make it hard to understand how to set up what should be a simple multiplayer option.

I am sure if you Googled it, some nerd who knows about IT will have it listed about how you sort it out. If it is explained properly, you and your friend/s will be playing it within half an hour.

Good luck mate.

I did Google it. That's what I mean when say I looked it up. The only thing I could even find that was remotely close was from years ago and probably won't work now with changes in tech. And I'm sue it was simple to start games back in the day when this came out but Gamespy went under. There was supposed to be server migration to Steamworks for this, Borderlands, and Civ IV. Well Borderlands and Civ IV got it... still no word on the status of Civ III. But it's not a huge shame since... well I don't LOVE the game or anything. It'd just be nice if something got done, either by getting the migration done already or announcing that it's not coming so I'll know.

Add this person to your friend list: The Professor - "The Hampshire, United Kingdom" one. He is the person who told me how to sort out the problem you have.

Now I have not spoken to the guy for around 4 months, but he knows how to sort your problem out.

Tell him Fatedd gave you his details to ask him.

Good luck mate.
