excess research
I seem to find conflicting information on this, so will be grateful for an answer:

A few aspect:

1. I know that any tech (= civilization advance) takes at least 4 turns to finish.
2. If we have more than enough research to complete a tech in 4 turns, will the excess research carry to another tech?
3. Suppose we complete a tech with a bit more than enough research, will the excess carry over the another tech?

I test a bit and think the answer to 2. is no, but I am not very confident ...

The excess is wasted and does not carry over to another topic of research. The four turn minimum is actually a setting that's easy to change (or used to be easy).

I've had instances when I forgot to check my research, and ended up having completed the research 'payments' by so much that my last turn finished it with zero research contribution.
To add on here, this is why the optimal move is typically to drop Science Funding to the lowest level that still takes 1 turn, when 1 turn remains.
Thanks!! It seems that in civ 3 every kind of excess (food, shield, research) is wasted. Tricky micromanagement if we look for perfectection :|
