Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Windows 10
Hello,

did anyone already try Civ3 on a Windows 10 machine? Are there any difficulties to be expected in anticipation of the release of Win10?

A video game working on peoples computers, but not on others, that's not incompatibility, that's another problem with there setup. I run Civilization 3 on Windows 10 just like a lot of people, so how is it incompatible with Windows 10 when it clearly isn't? Is it maybe just more likely everyone has a different configuration that might influence it?
It's incompatible for some people because it depends how well the OS collaborates with components of you computer. This means it may work for some people, but for others it wont. We blame this on the OS since it's only happened now that the OS has been built which is the OS causing the compatibility problems. It's up to the developers of the OS to change the way the OS works to make it compatible with the majority of systems, not the minority.
Any more questions?

That isn't even how it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ works?!

Civilization running on your damn computer or not isn't because someone has a certain video card or processor inside it, and even if your stupid ass logic was true it doesn't mean Windows 10 is the problem, it just pits the blame on the users hardware.

It's hard trying to make something simple to someone who clearly doesn't know a lot about computing, software and development. I don't know how I can explain it any better.
Take it to forums ;) They'll let you know what you want to know.

If it was anything like you said there would be consistency in what people are having problems with, some people can't launch the game, others have a black screen, broken resolution or any number of problems, they are all different. If it had to do with a certain set of hardware configurations you bet your ass we would know about it by now and have it patched.

I would say its a combination of both the OS and the system. The new OS has changed alot of things so very old games may have some trouble running as its been found out that Win10 does not have some things Win7 or Win8 had. In some cases its the hardware, but not always.

That's pretty much what I'm trying to tell this guy but he just wont listen :/

That wasn't even almost what you said.
Have Windows 10 and play CivIII through this Steam app without a problem. Looks like it loads a workable compatability portal (took a couple of minutes to load the first time) as i can't toggle back to windows whilst it is running.

i didnt understand that

Go to your conquests.ini file and search for the line "KeepRes=" If it exists, change it to KeepRes=1. If it doesn't exist, add KeepRes=1 to the bottom of the file.

(conquests.ini should be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests)

That will tell Civ3 to use your monitor's native resolution. If you don't have Civ3 set to run fullscreen, you'll want to do that, too. Civ3's default resolution is 1024x768 and it's old enough it has zero support for widescreen monitors EXCEPT when set to run at native resolution.

For those that do not know how to view the file extentions (the .ini bit) it's the one windows calls the "Configuration settings".

Also after adjusting this you may need to adjust the compatibility settings by right Clicking on Civ3Conquests (the "Application" type file), properties, Compatibility tab (the 2nd one), tick box "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3), or one of the other earlier versions of Windows. I usually choose SP3 as it was the most stable version of Windows till 7.

I have a clean install of Windows 10 64-bit and have just installed Civilization III Complete. Running the gane first time shrank the resolution down to 640x480, with blackness and a mouse pointer. I tried the above fix with no discernible difference and so had a crack at compatibility settings:

1. Browse to the folder as detailed above by Doug
2. Right click on Civ3Conquests.exe
3. Select Troubleshoot Compatibility
4. Select Try recommended settings
5. Test the game
6. Save settings (if successful)

The screen resolution was still at 640x480 to begin with, but this was to play the intro video. Once that was out of the way Doug's fullscreen fix worked. The only problem I need to tackle now is the audio stops working once a new game starts...

Thanks for the resolution fix Doug!

I have a Windows 10 laptop that is so worthless that it's more potato than computer. Despite that civ 3 runs smoothly as if I were playing on a gaming PC. However multiplayer isn't as smooth as you would want it to be.
works great! (with the exception of the intro movie crashing the game sometimes)
