I'm running VM Ware Fusion with a Windows 7 install on my late 2011 MacBook Pro. It can play South Park The Stick of Truth, Tourchlight 2 and Skyrim with no issues. I'm sure it can run Civilzation 3. I'll now for sure in a few hours.

It runs just fine on mac natively, but for some reason we can't download the client?

I would give Steam money if I could play this on Mac without needing to set up a partition and a Windows emulater etc. And I am clearly not alone.

Is there any recent data confirming that this still works, and on what OSs? I hate buying games on Steam that say they'll work on my computer, and having them crash constantly.

Been trying the Wine solution this morning, 99% success, still not quite there.
It looks like a lot of instructions, but it's actually quite quick and simple. Waiting for the download is the longest part.

To install a Windows version of Steam that runs on OSX (I'm using Yosemite).
- Start the windows Steam that was just created.
- Buy Civ 3 ($4.99) and wait for it to download.
- It will start, but for me it doesn't get past the 2K video. So need to skip this by adjusting a config file. Quit Steam, and...
- Go to the Wineskin App you created for Steam. Right click for 'show package contents'.
- Go to: drive_c/Steam/steamapps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete/Conquests
- Open conquests.ini in TextEdit
- Modify the top of the file by adding two lines to look like this:
[Conquests]
PlayIntro=0
KeepRes=1
- Save, Start Steam again. Civ 3 will start at the menu, and a game can be started just fine.


Issues:
- No mouse pointer.
Fix: Swap to another app (Command+Tab) and swap back to Civ

- Sound. Some sounds start and don't stop.
Fix: Turn off sound in Civ preferences and restart.

- Game crashes after a short while, with the following dump.
Fix: In steam settings turn off In Game Overlay and friend notifications

- Game crashes after an hour.
No fix yet. I imagine it is some steam preference that has to be disabled.

Hey I know this post is kind of old I am having a problem with starting up Civ 3 on my Mac. I installed in through installing Steam on WineBottler. I started up Steam through Wine and went to play Civ 3 but the only thing that would happen is the screen would go white and then go back to the steam window. I tried changing the code in the conquests.ini which had a VoiceQuality=0 and added the 2lines of code you told me to put in. The only thing that happened is I would be able to share screens on Skype and it would stay on the white screen but go back to the steam window right away. Any advice?

EDIT: BTW I'm trying to play on macbook pro 2012

No sorry. I deleted civ 3 as I was spending too much time on it!!!

Try the process from the start again. Did Steam in wine bottler download Civ 3 for Windows?

It won't work. I tried opening up steam, but nothing happened. :(

My post was from a while ago, and steam and MacOS have moved on a bit since then. Regardless, I imagine there will be instructions since then for running Steam on Mac (probably via wine).
Once that is done, the civ 3 stuff should be the same

I've got it working just fine. I'm running wine through the terminal using homebrew. I used these instructions: https://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/

When I play civ 3, I just run Windows 10 Pro installed directly onto the SSD. My Mac natively runs Windows 10 (through Boot Camp), and I use that the majority of the time.
