I would also suggest doing some competitive MP and playing some games with the 'Civplayers Civ3 League'. This is ordinarily team play 2v2s or 3v3s but you really have to up your speed and prioritize things. It could help you learn some more things (it sure helped me).
There's been some occasional topics asking how to get higher than Emperor which were asked by some less advanced players in General Discussion.
How I've proceeded:
Wide world size, raging barbarians, archipelago 80%, normal climate, temperate temperature and age of 4 billion.
Capital of Scandinavia with river nearby and some resources immediatly usable as cattles to improve the growth of your first city.
Try to find warriors in the barbarian villages (not possible to obtain settler or new advances after Demigod level if I'm right) and contact other civilizations to exchange new advances before capturing cities.
My rule is: always load game in order to win a fight (and the best advantage for your unit); if not reload.
After the first turn, you can retire and activate the summary replay to locate the other Civilizations.
I've also other hinds to increase your efficiency but you certainly have some I don't know. Try this first.
Load and reload and re.... needs a lot of time!!!!!
At the evidence it should be possible to choice others civilizations.
Good luck.
