Medieval Infantry looses vs Warrior vs anything?
I have been playing the Romans or Germans lately quite a bit but both times no matter how I play I run into the same problem.

I'm playing Chieftain as I'm only getting back into it.

A nation eventually declares war on me but I have tons of Medieval Infantry at that point which at 4.2.1 should hold of anything similar...I would assume.

------------------------

I then get attacked by the enemy with Swordmen and simple units like Archers and Warriors (not even Veterans) who then beat down my Infantry.

Swordsman I can understand that they would sometimes win at 3.2.1 as they are about on par with the Infantry but they also win 9\10 times :(

Aside the Swordsman, how is that even possible with Warriors?

It's not like they attack with 20 warriors and the last one kills my unit, I'm talking a single Warrior attacking my Infantry inside a town and beating him senseless!

Even at random dice roles (or what ever Civ uses) this is ♥♥♥♥♥ic with the Warrior being 1.1.1.

------------------------

Sometimes the Celts have Gallic Swordsman which at 3.2.2 make more sense to beat me down, though they always win with 0 or max 1 loss in their healthbar against my Infantry, no matter if I attack or they do.

That also makes zero sense as those units fighting each other should be more equal-ish.

------------------------

Is the AI always favored in battles?

Is there any units I can build in the same era that can be used to counter attack those pesky Swordsmen or other Infantry?

Seems nobody else either knows then. In the meantime I have tried several new tactics and all end the same.

In my last game I had tons of Musketmen within Barricades which kept getting destroyed by Archers and plain Warriors.

Seeing that is on Chieftain I think I will simply skip Civ3 and continue playing Civ4.

If anyone experienced has any additional insight please feel free to share.

It happens sometimes to me, but nothing horrbile. Sometimes i lose a knight in attack against a longbowman, but it is okay. I have other 10 kinghts to punish him.

Maybe you already know but lots of the factors in battle depends on the terrain. You get like -50% with a melee unit when crossing a river to attack another melee unit, and if those are in a forest or on a hill, you lose another -25%. And if they have a wall, which hasn't been catapulted, you get another -50% or something. I'm not exactly sure of the numbers for Civ 3 as it's been a while, but these are notions that are important to deal with in Civs series.

4.2.1 stands for 4 attack, 2 defence, 1 movement. So your medieval infantry is a good attacker but poor defender. a swordsman at 3.2.1 has a higher attack value (3) than your medieval infantry has defensive value (2) so is more likely to win than not. Even a warrior has a reasonble chance of winning after all your medieval infantry is no better at defending than a spearman, one of the earliest units around with the warrior. You need to use your troops to their strengths and keep your expensive to produce offensive units attacking rather than defending. As Portwills says the terrain also plays its part. There are lots of guides on sites like civfanatics that can give you all the detail that you need. There are also utilities that will help you see the probability of the outcome of a battle. Even seemingly vastly outmatched unitss can have a very small probability of unexpected victory - just wait until you come across a spearman versus a tank!

Thanks for the response and the useful info. I was afraid the defence stat is dominated by a lesser unit's attack stat.

That somehow makes little sense though that a guy throwing rocks can beat up a guy in full metal armour or a spearman defeating a Tank.

At first glance that would look like an oversight on the development of the game but I reckon it's intentional and just something I will have to deal with :)

Thanks again for the response much appreciated :)
