You might be able to with a no-CD patch. Steam has the files, but doesnt have the EXE to run vanilla or PTW, but if you got the patch for steam or the disc version, you should be able to play it. The reason the discs dont work is I think because the CD protection on the discs are not supported by Windows anymore.

i imagine you would need to go to an earlier version of windows to get the cd to work. might i ask why you want to play on the classic version?

Personally, I think the classic version beats steam's version hands down. Period.

How do I get rid of the DLCs?
Twerkenstein Nov 24, 2019 @ 12:27pm
See I prefer the older version there are changes i dont care for with the DLC mostly its not a lot but enough that I end up getting into a game and half way through just wishing it was tge classic its really sad that they dont include the ability to play the classic versions from the steam or GOG versions

I just find a way to play "vanilla" civ 3(base game) using the Civ III complete game, without downloading anything.

You should copy the archive called "civ3mod.bic" found in the folder of the game(steam/steamapps/common/civ 3 complete) on the folder called Scenarios(found in the same location that the file, the civ 3 folder).
To play it you will go to the game, and select Civ- content and search "civ3mod.bic".

I just tested it and works, i could see only the base civs and the base technologies.
I dont know if the government values are the vanilla ones, but i think that this would be correct.

I found also a way to play the expansion Play The World, it just consist in enter the game and in the civ-content section, and find the scenario called "player1mod.bix". It says that is the game base reworked in same rules, but i saw it essentialy like the vanilla PTW, and you also can select the expansion civs(without the agicultural and seafaring traits).

Yes game will play older scenario files whether bic or bix. But I have read there might be a few complications of newer game settings like jungle tiles infecting them, since it gets it from the exe, not the scenario file. But in the scenario file itself, it will only have the older editor settings.

You're right in that. I saw that for example philosophy gives you a free tech if you discover it first, and that the swamplands are even on the base game scenario that i mentioned.

I think that the defects that i found are bearables, more considering that get the original exe into the civ complete game would not execute it normally(i tested it some days ago, from a legal way), so i consider that this could be the more accurate to the vanilla and PTW ways using the steam game(obviosly, without buying the other 3 games and using a legal way).

On the other hand, you will not have Zeus statue and Templar knights, and no C3C traits(agricultural and seafaring) that i think that make a big difference, and i find more comfortable without them.
