Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Windows 10 Crashes :(
Civ III is still by far my favourite Civ, but it seems very unstable on Windows 10. Does anyone know of a way to make it more stable? Thanks.

I hate W10, and I'm actually surprised at how well Civ III works on it (for me at least). I think it crashed maybe once in over 200 hours since going to 10 .BTW, my Steam hours don't reflect my total playing time.
Does yours crash randomly, or at specific spots in game? IE, going to the diplomacy screen.

Every time i try to run CivIII in W10 it crashes. It says "running" followed by "complete" in a matter of seconds

It's crashing for me, I never tried this series out before so since it's free I figured might as well.

I found the executable and selected Windows 7 mode under Compatibility Settings and it hasn't crashed... yet!

I went to the folder it's installed in (SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests) and looked for the Civ3Conquests.exe. I then right-clicked > Properties > Compatibiliy, and then selected Compatibility Mode > Windows 7.

Now I just run Civ3Conquest.exe directly without going through Steam. So far so good!

I went to the conquests.ini file in the conquest folder and typed in the command PlayIntro=0 under [Conquests] and it worked. Thank you guys!

Just give my money back, simple.

I had the same problem. Civilization III (on 64-bit Windows 10 with AMD graphics) will crash when:

a) you click the mouse during the intro video, or
b) you win a game (crashes during both space victory and cultural victory)

To avoid crashing when you start the application in Windows 10, simply don't use the keyboard or mouse during the intro video; you have to let it play out each time. The game will still crash when you achieve victory, but otherwise is completely normal. You can play out the entire game, but there is no "just one more turn" since the game crashes when the victory scene loads.

I was able to solve both crash scenarios by simply:

a) going to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization III Complete\Conquests\",
b) right-clicking on "Civ3Conquests.exe",
c) selecting "Properties,"
d) then "Compatibility",
e) then "Run compatibility troubleshooter".
f) then "Try recommended settings".

Windows 10 then automatically selects what it thinks will be the best settings. It applied Windows 8 settings for Civilization III (not Windows 7 settings), and that completely resolved the crashes. I can now skip the intro video by clicking the mouse, and the game does not crash when I achieve victory. I haven't tested this for every victory type though. I tested this fix with both the cultural victory and the space victory, and everything works for me now.

Won't help for end of game, but in the Conquests.ini you can add SkipIntro=0 and no intro video is played. Game starts up faster and zero risk of it crashing cause of the intro video.
