So, being very optimistic, the only updates you could expect are about character balance. Being realistic don't expect even than. At least characters are well balanced, so we will survive with it.
You know some of the other characters from the game intros and endings, like Persefone, Zane, or Menelker.
Every fighting game that's not made by Capcom or NRS is a big bet. Arcsys completely overhauled guilty gear, and it paid off greatly, but their dungeon fighter game seems to have flopped, and the new melty blood cratered.
As much as I hate to say it, a guest character may also help in this regard to drive people to the game.
That and the game might not be so popular since how boring is to watch experienced players fight in this game as they only use 1 or 2 moves every round every fight.
Surprising a free cross-play game that takes place in a fantasy universe and ACTUALLY does something with the potential for different races and characters is dead. -_-
