Just find what interests you. Giving the game a chance, not specifically what I want from the franchise, but I'm open-minded.
The multiplayer's attempt at slanting gameplay with their multi-objective and multi-threat system seems to be an attempt at being different, but from what I read a lot of journalists really didn't like it. It made it messy and unfocused and makes you, at times, wondering why you're even playing with other players.
All opinions of course, but with the game not even being released yet it's as equally stupid for you to go "Durr, Bob, why no one likey shooty shooty zombie butt?"
The game will release and, as always, the opinion of the masses will kill it or save it. Welcome to the age where the majority rules and these days the majority are casuals. /shrug
This 'most previews were vastly negative' is largely, LARGELY untrue. In fact, there were more positive than negative (not that there was no negative, the most popular negative one would be Eurogamer's, but as someone who is on the fence about the game but going to give it a swing anyway, I was following the game's previews for a long while, to see how others felt on it during play sessions).
Here's a few positive ones just from a quick google search:

A few I found quickly from googling.
Later beaten by Dying Light, but it was a record holder for top selling first entry in a new horror IP when it released, beating the previous holder, Dead Space.
