Stuck at getting turnips from tree (game broken?)

So you're supposed to feed this critter some turnips to get a worm for fishing - but the game won't let me click on the tree unless the critter hasn't eaten any. The tree itself only gives 1 or 2 turnips, and I seem to need more than that to be able to make the critter leave. So I can never get more than 1 or 2, and I am stuck. What gives?

Apparently I had to drink water to be able to pee more on the tree - no walkthrough seems to talk about this aspect of it.

And drinking water multiple times increases the number of turnips that comes out - was wondering what the hell was going on when I couldn't click on the tree as by default I could, and after that it just wouldn't let me again without any feedback
