Yes

Beyond the Sword doesn't have all the content of Warlords, and vice versa. They're different variations of the game.

Beyond the Sword is the definitive version of the base game, colonization is more of a stand alone expansion that's it's own thing and plays very different. Also try and check out the Future War official mod which adds sci fi future content if that interests you. It can be played as either a scenario or just a normal game with extra tech.

IMHO, you should start playing Civilization IV (the base game). When you get tired of that, you can try Warlords or Beyond the Sword.

Warlords has extra content and more focus on warfare and conquering.

Beyond the Sword has extra content and more focus on diplomacy and economics.

Like Ash//Fox says, Civilization IV: Colonization is a completely different game. It's a remake of Sid Meier's Colonization from 1992, using the Civilization IV engine. So you can play it in any order.

Not true at all. Each expansion of IV expanded and improved on the previous. As Ash said, BTS is the definitive version of the game, and the one anyone should play now.

Only thing prior versions like Warlords has is its specific scenarios (which are basically official mods), some of which have been converted to BTS by the community.

The focus on Warlords was indeed combat based, but all those mechanics exist in BTS, and further improved.

Can you play the tutorial through BtS?

Well, true, but there are also some rule changes between Warlords and BtS. Eg, in BtS you now need a Great Spy to build Scotland Yard, but its no longer a National Wonder and you can build it in as many cities you like.
