Well, I tried it, but my friend on the mac was asked to create a gamespy account to be allowed to play online, but wasn't able to do so perhaps because they don't exist anymore. Therefore, I would warn all prospective buyers that an online mode does not allow for crossplay between PC and Mac versions of this game.

i believe ur browsed this tabs in civ 4: multiplayer > internet games > create new account.
as game spy shuts this is not possible anymore without tweaks.
read here how to play multiplayer online anyway and leave a comment where on mac the hosts file is located https://steamcommunity.com/app/3900/discussions/0/1742264052620744131/

after ur friend applied the changes on the hosts file, it will be possible to navigate to "create new account" and log in regular to zulans server.

both of u need do this procedure. if one of u is using the steam beta and one(mac) is using zulans server u will not beable to meet because its inherent differerent architecture

Hi, I'm also a Civ IV veteran that would like to purchase the game for both myself and my brother. We played this game quite a while ago and we both are only purchasing the vanilla version. He is using Mac OS and I'm simply using Windows. If we would like to play co-operative multiplayer, is there an option to play against AI whilst still in a multiplayer lobby?
