JUST installed it along with Beyond the Sword and got it to work.

Verification consisted (after all of the steps below) of starting the game, doing a custom game setup with 17 AI opponents, setting up my first city, selecting my first warrior to construct, moving my first warrior, advancing a turn, selecting a tech, moving the warrior again, saving the game, and loading the save. All worked to that point with no errors. Hopefully there won't be any going forward from there.

Here are the details:

1) Have physical CD for both Civ IV and Civ IV Beyond the Sword
2) Running with WINDOWS 10 Home x64

I spent some time looking online, and here's what worked.

3) This will all be a new install. I have no idea how to get something you previously installed to work. Barely made this happen.

4) You wil need to create a new directory at the C: level. Call it C:/GAMES
(This is because there are protection/write issues in WIN10 that will prohibit installation into the /PROGRAMS folder.)

5) Before you begin installing, find and download the Civ IV 1.61, BTS 3.17 and BTS 3.19 Patches to your download or a temp folder.

6) Insert the Civ IV disc. You will need to navigate to your CD Drive folder and manually start the SETUP by RIGHT CLICKING and RUNNING AS ADMINISTRATOR. ------Be sure to select CUSTOM installation so you can point it at the C:/GAMES folder you created.

7) Do the install. Do NOT run the game upon completion. (After installation, if it has you reinstall Disc 1, do so, then select "DO NOTHING" when the option box pops up.)

8) The instructions that I followed told me to install Civ IV patch 1.61, but when I tried to run it, there was an error message about not being able to find the program. (If you try to run it, BE SURE to right click and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.) So I skipped this step, hoping a subsequent patch (see below) would include anything needed from this one. (It appears that it does.)

9) Insert the Beyond the Sword disc. You will need to navigate to your CD Drive folder and manually start the SETUP by RIGHT CLICKING and RUNNING AS ADMINISTRATOR. If it gives you an option for a CUSTOM INSTALL, be sure to select it and point it at the same (C:/GAMES) folder. My install automatically found the folder and started doing the install, happy as a clam.

10) Do the install. Do NOT run the game upon completion. (After installation if it has you reinstall Disc 1, do so, then select "DO NOTHING" when the option box pops up.)

10) Go to your download or temp folder (wherever you put the three patches) and RIGHT CLICK/RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR on Patch 3.17

11) Go to your download or temp folder (wherever you put the two patches) and RIGHT CLICK/RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR on Patch 3.19

That should do it.

I then navigated to the Beyond the Sword folder and ran the game from the BeyondtheSword.exe file. (WIN10 did not add it to my start menu.)

Once I verified that it worked, I went back, right clicked on the .exe and pinned it to the START MENU.

I hope all of this helps you. This was a very frustrating problem that basically came down to two different companies (2K and Microsoft) both doing their own thing, not coordinating to make sure this game installed seemlessly without all this hubbub, then pointing at each other and saying "It's not us it's them" until everybody that was complaining gave up and walked away.

Essentially, there are some digitial rights things in the software for CIV IV that Microsoft declared "unsafe", so they no longer support or include the piece of software in WINDOWS 10 that the straight install of CIV IV needs. Microsoft also did something to the program folder that does not allow the game to properly install, hence the need for a user created folder at the C: level.

I wish I could tell you that this will work for the Steam version. I do not know.
I read a variety of things, from YES to NO.
Steam does not list WIN10 as a valid OS for the game.
You would like to think they did something to make it work if they're still selling it now, as WIndows 7 is about to be declated "unsupported" in 2020, but I can't say for sure.

So, again, good luck.
I know this worked for me, hope it works for you.
If it does, please feel to pass the word if you belong to any other CIV forum, as after 2020, WIN10 will be one of the only available OS to run. Think a lot of people are going to run into this as they upgrade or buy new systems in the next couple years.

I also have a physical copy that didn't work on my old computer so I got the Steam version. I recently got a computer with Windows 10 and my Steam version works just fine on it.

2K should get their ♥♥♥♥ together, they make all the proffit!
With those that have the CD version that want the steam version you can contact the company and request a steam key for it. You just need to send a picture of the discs to them.
