It probably was the first attempt at an eSport entry for the series but it failed so spectacularly that it almost killed it alltogether.
The DLC are needed to keep the game updated and the reception is great. We have new original characters, guest characters, returning characters, new stages, new cosmetics, new music, and new gameplay mechanics + balance changes. None of that would be possible without DLC and online updates.
Oh, and also, I think the "online pass" might have contributed to Tag 2's popularity as well. Definitely don't miss those days x_x
For T7's sake, giving way the base game to draw in people to buy the season passes.
Want to gauge T7 success, measure their Season 2 and soon Season 3 sales.
T8 better have 10x more budget than T7
It's a sort of spinoff, looking at the main plot
It's a major success because the game is really good.
And due to DLC it's probably a much greater success financially as well.
