Easier way to master the combos?
Started yesterday and cannot master the combos properly. People are not kidding about it being the most complex fighting game. Is the arcade box thing a must have? Does that make it easier to do combos? There's one combo I'm sure I have done right but for some reason it doesn't do exactly what I wanted it to. I enable the display history of what button I pressed and it's exactly the right buttons for a certain combo I'm trying to master but sightly different results or just completely fails which I don't understand at all. Are controllers not suitable for this game? Using Xbox controller.

I would recommend playing this game on a keyboard. Learning combos is all about practice. Avoid execution heavy optimal combos and start with something easy and practical that you will be able to do reliably in a match.

DS4 is supported by Steam. Must be setup in big picture mode but when you are done it can be switched back to normal steam.

DS3 requires software for xbox360 emulation like SCP Tools or Motioninjoy. Never use straight Motioninjoy though, offline patch is a must. They don't own the domain it used for updates anymore so anyone could buy it and put malware disguised as an update there.

most bnb combos are just dial up strings. play more and you'll get the hang of it. control/stick/keyboard is all preference

I practiced an hour. never got one properly. there's something wrong. Maybe the xbox controller just full of problems for this game.

1. you played for a day you can not possibly expect to master ANYTHING in that short time span. Like for an example EWGFs or Taunt Jet uppers are hard to do in live matches players has been playing and trainning for YEARS and they still mess them up sometimes and theys till drop combos. You Can Not Expect To Master Anything.

2.Not the most complex fighting game it is just different that what people are used to.

3. We call it a FightStick, and no it does not matter if you use it or not. Many top players uses ps4 controllers or pads as we like to call it. Some people find it more fun or natural to play on a stick others dont it is up to you but its good to try it if you get the chance or get the cash.

4.Before I say anything about combos. Do not even worry about combos. Do not even Waste time on them YET. I know they are cool to look at I know they are flashy and all. and I know we just wanna do crazy damage. But this should not be your focus when youre starting out tekken or any fighting games. You need to learn how the game works how the system mechanics function. You need to learn things like BLocking lows highs and mids what those even are what is a luauncher what a basic game plan looks like poking zoning throwing breaking throws learning what your buttons do for your character how to MOVE back dashing side stepping basic strings punishing stuff like that you can go on youtuibe for all off those
once you get a grasp of the fundamentals of the game then you can sit down with a character and practice their bnb(bread and butter) combos
combos that you will rely on every match
a counter hit combo block punish combos

5. For the combos itself the reason why you are dropping combos period is beacuse you do not have the muscle memory for it yet. You need to break them down and practice each part over and over again untill the move you want to do in your head comes out the way you want it.
Take this combo for feng as an example(you should look up fighting game notions for fighting games and learn it); d/f+3: 2 d/b+1,4; S! dash f+3,4; b+1+2.
you would learn it in chunks so youd practice linking the down forward 3;2 into down back 1 4
and keep doing it until you can do it at least 5 times in a row with out dropping it or with wrong inputs then after you feel good about that you would add the next part the dash and ONLY that part and keep doing it until lyou feel good again and then add teh forward 3 4 and just keep up that cycle untill you can complete the combo
all you need

You don’t have to do advance combos all of the time. You can still do easy mode combos and get a minimal of 50 damage.

Depending on the situation it’s best to use easy mode combos because of wall distancing. If they are too close to the wall then you won’t get the optimal wallsplat:

It is true that xbox is bad but I have played with it for some time and only problems I had were korean back dash and just frames. Combos and normal inputs were ok I think.

The issue with the d-pad is that its hard to "slide" from one input to another with x-box.

After that I went for ps4 controller with wireless connection. The wired connections SUCKS for ps4 since cables disconnect all the time.

BTW ps4 d-pad feels weird at first since its easy to slide with "arrow" inputs from one another but once you get used to it its really super advantageous.

Here's an idea.

Don't jump on the BnB combos straight away, practice to get the 1st combo from each section in the sample combos in the in-game game. Not the biggest 10 hit combo, not the 3rd big damage combo in each section, the very first ones.

Practice those until you can get them on every start-up launcher they are shows to use.

What does do is give you some combos to work with when you are learning the game, then try to add variations yourself.

For example, for Alisa, her d/f 2 starting combo is d/f 2 4 ff2,3, it's a nice chunk of damage, easy to perform, it's ok and reliable. A variation I added was chaing the ff2,3 to a ff3,4,4. It's more damage, but stricter timing as you can whiff a couple of the hits from the final move if you don't time it right.

BnB combos are closer to the advanced side of what you need to perform.

If you can't do the basics, you can't do the advanced stuff, and if you start at the advanced stuff, 1h won't give you anything.

Here's an example, in DoA 6, there's the combo challenge, (which is a feature I'd love to see Tekken have), where you start will small close hits and few hit combos, and it keep going and going. Well, for most combos, up to the last, I pulled them off in a few tries, I think 10 tries was the max I needed, but for the 20th and final combo for Marie Rose, it took me close to 7 hours to be able to do it even once, why? Because it was really darn complex, requiring exact timings, a close hit at the end, and it just wasn't easy 20+ hits combo for a beginner. Sure, since then I improved quite a good bit managing to pull off those final combos.

The point is that you can't just assume that "I'll be able to pull off a complex combo in 1h as a new player".

If you're a new player, start with beginner stuff, simpler combos, even if they aren't the optimal one. You should be able to pull off at least some combos in the beginning instead of focusing on the big stuff.

It looks like I'm the only one on the planet who thinks that the 360 controller has the best d-pad.

Don't listen to this bullshitter. Controller preference is completely subjective and anyone telling you otherwise is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiot.
Lazaar May 16, 2020 @ 4:25pm
OP what character are you playing as and what combos are you trying to do? This is such a frustratingly vague post. Is it just for venting or actually wanting help?

Ps3 pad user (connected wirelessly to steam link) for Tekken. Been playing fighting games since the first Street Fighter 2/MK1. Tried many pads but the playstation is far superior for fighting games like Tekken.
