Need Beginner Character - Poke, Spacing, Fundamentals

Hi!

I'm a complete beginner to the Tekken and "health bar" fighting games in general. The closest thing I play is platform fighters like Brawlhalla (which is not close at all!) but close enough where I know my playstyle.

I am looking for spacing. Poke playstyle, punishes that reward good pacing in the combat. I do not like rushdown or grappling that much.

Any character recommendations, tips, corrections, or "wake-up slaps"/"you are wrong about x" is welcome! Thank you!

Non mashable more movement and tac oriented chars:

- Master Raven (unorthodox char, very poke and tech heavy)
- Asuka (best defensive char but can be mashy due to inf jab strings)
- Lars (good wall carry, stance heavy, annoying sounds)
- Leo (got better with the recent update, close and mid range heavy, many puns are high)
- Zafina (nimble and evasive, tricky to use due to stances, pun damage not always good)
- Bob (mishima style movement but more evasive, lacks mishima power tools, mostly hit and run on higher ranks, execution heavy)

If you want to question your life and your own being on this earth, go for Lei.

Noctis is the easiest for sure. Or Kuni.

He doesn't want rushdown and people are recommending Kuni and Noctis two rushdown chars with infinite range?

Sounds like he wants to play someone like Asuka or AK.

I have dedicated tonight to trying Steve Fox, and I really love his spacing and range tools! He has great counters and punishes. The counters are very satisfying online ^^

I recommend Asuka. Very chill and easy character to learn. She has everything that you need as a beginner. I myself started with Asuka and then moved to Steve, who is my number one character right now.

You should look on youtube for a wake up guide to tell you all the ways to get back up once you have been knocked down if you haven't figured them out yet. That's a good thing to get down early so you don't get bad habits like too many backsprings for me.

AK is Armor King yeah.

He's got some grapples but compared to King he's very much mid check/low poke orientated with some good whiff punishment/punishement.

Jack-7 is prolly your description incarnated. hes quite literally only pokes and whiff punishes with tools that reward him for that play style. Also excellent first character to pick up as he's quite easy and teaches spacing etc.

Also dont listen to anyone recommending mishimas as they are traditionally a rush-down 50/50 characters with Heihachi as exception as hes mainly poke oriented rush-down that wears you down with mids.

As for Steve hes mainly a counterhit character that strongly relies on timing, very hard character for beginners but if you like him give him a shot. Also kind off a rush down char but you gotta play him kinda smart if your opponent knows the mu.

Nina/anna is also a rush-down archetypes with one relying very strongly on unsafe 50/50's that kill the opponent on hit quite literally a coinflip.

So yeah what i recommend is either Asuka or Jack-7 as they both have really good pokes and good reward on a whiffpunish.

Another char that you could give a shot is Lee and hes kinda a poke counterhit hybrid where you annoy the opponent with your superior keep-out and transition rapidly between rush-down,keep-out and counter hit fishing.He is quite technical though so idk if its your cup of tea.

I will look at Jack-7, I have never seen this recommendation before, although I am very interested in Asuka from other comments... who is the character with unsafe, Nina or Anna?
