Is Lei Wulong a bit too... strong/ cheap?
So I've been maining Lei Wulong for a while now and I absolutely love the character. Even when he gets boring sometimes I always go back to him. But I'm starting to notice something... I tend to win more with Lei than I did with the other characters and I feel like I'm only winning because of Lei's gimmicks. I mean his db4, 4 is an unseable low. His stances can mix you up (I especially abuse his sideway stance A LOT.) And I especially love mixing people up with his BT stance.

I feel like a good portion of his moves from certain stances are so abuseable that it's laughable. Especially his d44. Put myself + on block and boom I can easily db4,4 them. Doesn't work all the time of course but it works a good portion of the time.

And note.... I'm not even good with him and I don't even use razor rush sometimes.

If you tell me to use someone like Marshall Law or some other poking character, I know for sure I will die instantly because Im so used to Lei's gimmicks.

I know people say that Lei is a technical character, but if you know his core moves and core stances for neutral, i would say you would do slightly more than decent with him even for noobies. You just have to get used to getting into stance. I heard that some people say he is a "noob" killer because of his gimmicks.

Also, the reason why I'm asking this question is because I managed to beat someone who had 1000 hours+ more than me and I was thinking.... how is that even possible?

I don't know I need opinions.

well, thats already a very good sign that you can recognize the reasons you are winning/losing.i also had to realize my wins were "fake" and just the result of me flowcharting my way to victory(luckily for me i realized that very early at around yellow ranks) and lei can indeed carry very hard with his gimmicks so keep that in mind if at some point you decide you want to get good and take this game seriously.realizing your flowcharts and the reasons you winning so easily can save you from delusion and from taking the bunga route which will cause you to plateau very hard once you reach levels at which people can easily counter your sh*t.i have to say im impressed tho, most people dont even realize they are cheesing with their character and think they are playing well so as a result they end up stuck once you counter their stuff not knowing how to proceed.answering your question tho,i personally dont think he is cheap or too strong but he is very very cheesy and bunga friendly so thats why you may feel that way

I appreciate that. Im just trying to be realistic with myself. I was actually thinking of changing to a different character that can challenge me where I'm forced to play in such a way that I don't become flowcharts. I mean I'll still play lei for sure, but he can be boring sometimes even if you win with him.

And yeah I can definitely see him being too cheesy.

yeah you can do that or you can also just watch top lei players and see how they play so that you can understand which moves are actual tools and which moves are gimmicks that will never work vs knowledgable players, thats how i realized that spamming dodges with steve was a terrible idea even if it looked cool cause no one was doing them nearly as much as me and when they did(often missclick anyway)they would get launched and killed for it.once again tho,i really like your awereness

He is fun to watch but not to versus against. I still need to know what every stance is capable of. My favorite is showing Lei that he isnt the only one who can lie down to you know. XP

Strong? Debatable. Cheap? Yes. Lei has alot of weird unorthodox moves that will throw people off guard and often have really weird properties. This includes is stances, attacks etc. Doesn't mean you shouldn't play Lei though, keep playing what you find is fun.
=\[P]/= 27 MAY 2021 a las 22:39
on top of that, match up knowledge is also the problem
Lei is one of "lab character"
it means to fight him, you have to buy him, and lab him to know what he can do

Lei isn't kind of typical characters who has 15-20 key moves and you can deal with him after 2-3 fight
iirc he has longest move list in the game

even I have 1000+ hrs. in this game, I still have a very hard time fighting average Lei player
Forza Piadina 27 MAY 2021 a las 23:36
Probably he is strong against your 10 years old bro. I have never seen A lei playing and winning an icfc or an evo tournament(but 1 or 2 over thousand and thousand of players.).
Lei it's and old character with clucky stance mechanics. The neutral sucks compared to other characters, he has bad poke, no frame advantage. bad strings on neutral and some stance have a risky 50/50. Entering stance form razor rush is good only against newbie because he is in -frame even on hit (but the first punch) and you can hit every time.
He is a character relying mainly on the opponent's ignorance but it still has some good moves like db44, ff4, SS4, razor rush, uf3.

His 50/50 is crazy. He is kinda like anna only with way worse poking and convoluted gameplan but also more variability so all in all he sits somewhere in lower mid tier Id say.

So I just faced a rare Lei today and boy did I piss my pants... I haven't had much practice against him at all and 90% of the time I'm on the air floating coz swept or launched. :'(
Lost 0-5 welp

All gimmicky chars are cheap. Im not totally sure if they give u "fake wins", coz for me a win is a win no matter what.

But in that context, Im sure if u win by flowcharting and gimmicks without fundamentals u will struggle against players who knows how to shut down your gimmicks.

So in my opinion, they are cheap, but being strong depends on the player u fight. They dont know the match up? That's not what makes a char strong.

But can u win against stronger opponents using him? That defines how strong your char is.

Also, 1k hours means nothing on player's skill btw.
