Haven't played Tekken since 3, can I still play this?
As the title says really, been bored with a lot of games recently and want something competitive I can learn and spend time on. However while I like the look of Tekken and loved 3, Tekken 3 on PS1 was literally the last fighting game I played, so will I just be playing against people for who fighting games are their bread and butter with no hope of learning properly or is it more approachable?

Why not, you will get better as you play. In the online mode if you apply yourself and learn about the game you will rise past blue ranks in no time. Many people get stuck at those ranks because they never learn about frame data or how to launch and juggle(aerial combo), block, or punish.
It all depends on the effort you want to put, and how fun/rewarding you find it.

Well, Tekken 3 was my last fighting game as well. And I was like, 8. And all I did was mash buttons.

So, yeah, you can. Hope you don't get frustrated easily, though :)

Sure you can, T7 is very approachable. Its not about winning, but learning when you lose. If you can get past that, you'll find yourself climbing ranks.

As with all fighting games people online are playing seriously and trying to win, so be prepared for that, also there are new mechanics to get used to, but otherwise it still for the most part plays like Tekken 3 so you've got a head start there :P.

My last tekken game before this was T4 and most basic stuff just came right back as muscle memory so yeah.

Tekken is difficult to master but it's pretty easy to enjoy at any level due to wide range of difficulty in execution barrier. Like even simple moves can take out 25% of hp, and lot of novice poking game is done around normals (single button, direction-less attacks).

Tekken 3 really did set the standard for rest of the Tekken franchise too, so that's another plus in familiarity.
I played tekken 3 a lot - and then only for a while Tekken 4 and 5 and i totally LOVE Tekken 7.

It's even better than Tekken 3 in my mind - and I am counting insane amount of nostalgia into this comparison :D

The thing is - you don't have to play ranked. You can look up friends on steam that have similar skill as you have. (I had like 4 friends before Tekken and now about 15). Ranked is really THE challange.
Go into ranked only when you are ready to truly test your limits. When you stop progressing and you get frustrated - you have reached you current ceiling and you can stop playing ranked and improve with friends and practice if you wish calmer experience. You can return into ranked after some time for the challange again.

I was thinking of going through the story with all the characters to see which ones I gel with then a bit of time in practise if I need it to learn the important combos and moves I'll need. Spent most of the day watching Super Couch Fighters to learn basics like corkscrews, homing attacks, and just generally lots of little things, like that against new players it seems you just block the second they enter rage and they'll probably waste it.

Think I'll give it a go, I imagine even if I can't fathon ranked I'll get plenty of enjoyments worth against the AI and friends anyway.

Thanks for help =)
i started with 6 after 3 (played some of 4 and 5 in arcades)
and wasn't dissapointed (played online on addbox 360 and mostly had decent games with players whos skill range wasn't too high)

Then i platted Tekken Tag 1 HD on PS3 in a day, moved on to Tekken Tag 2 on PS3 and got jugged something fierce online on PS3 since i wasn't used to the tag mechanics....
when it started going downhill
Then Tekken 7 came out and am considereing quitting Tekken again since it going to ♥♥♥♥.

Tekken Bowl DLC?!? OMG way to "fix" Tekken Bamco Namcai.....

Watch out - you don't choose characters in story mode. It is not like in Tekken 3 where you play arcade over and over and get different animation at the end. It is like Injustice/Mortal combat - you have story animations and in between them fight with determined characters. It is about 3 hours long.

The "main" mode - or at least the best mode to train characters is treasure hunt mode. There is no story but you are ranking up as you win and opponents get harder. Imho it is even better than classical arcade since you can play it longer with one character.

don't forget with Soul Cal 5's lazy garbage slideshow cringe cutscenes inbetween....
Also apparently the Tekkens take place months apart so they have multiple iron fist tournaments in the same year?!?

Yeah - I would love to say that the story is decent but...it's not good - but hey it's the first attempt to tell elaborate story in Tekken series :) I like it more than a few seconds of cutscenes. Looking forward to future Tekken games since I hope they can improve the quality. They can certainly build something interresting on the lore they are creating.

No you can't. Only people that played Tekken 5 and onward may play Tekken 7.
