Korean Back Dashing
I just got the game. I'm having a great time learning the combo system and mechanics. I've seen some streams so I know about korean back dashing, but it seems even at the beginner level in ranked everyone is kbd'ing like a pro. Is it so standard that everyone I face will know it? How soon should I be putting a lot of time into learning how to do it effectively? Seems like I've gone up against very few people that are at a basic skill level, but I'll chalk that up to me not knowing how severe the skill gap is. Also, is kbd tougher with some characters than with others?

i think some characters like paul who has a qcb sway can’t kbd
it coz most of them are smurfs. real beginners will do clunky backdashes
u can start using kbds after u understand the concept of spacing and moves range. basically the fundamentals
yes, some characters have a hard time to kbds, just like Idiot said, coz of qcb sway
chars like Paul, Bryan, and Nina. Nina has reverse waivu waivu tho (hayashida step)

every character can KBD. you just have to kbd the normal way with sway characters

Mostly because (as Rikkore mentioned) there's a lot of smurfs in this game. If you're doing actual KBD (b, db, b) then it can be done on any character and it isn't any more difficult with one character over the other.

If you're just starting out I wouldn't even recommend learning this as it'll take you a lot of time to get it. Unless your execution is already good (if you play games like DMC or Souls and such) I would say stay away from the really technical stuff like KBD and the hardest combos for now. Not to mention KBD won't always save you from gimmicks.

For now, I would say just keep playing the game and try to understand how the game works. Try to get a read on your opponent and block a low, or low parry a snake edge, or punish unsafe moves etc. It can be really discouraging at beginner level because you're going to lose to gimmicks A LOT and it'll make you mad. But once you get better and you get to the higher ranks you'll need good movement which is where KBD would come in.

Matchup knowledge is EXTREMELY important in Tekken. When I first started out with Tekken 6, all I would do is play the Ghost Battle mode (or Treasure Battle in T7) so I could learn the other characters' moves because I would keep getting rekt by them in online mode.

So, pretty much Tekken is an incredibly deep game where the skill level between a beginner and a pro is so insanely massive that it takes you several years before you're considered "good" at the game. It's more of a learning experience than it is a video game where you mash buttons.

The two most useful videos I've found for Korean Backdashes or Backdash Cancels:

You have to grind it into your muscle memory.

I mostly disagree with this post. KBD was one of the first things I started practicing when I got Tekken. Many people I've met online can backdash well with <500 hours.

You will find people who are new and good at backdash cancels and it's perfectly acceptable to start practicing now. There are no prerequisites to learning KBD.
ofc, but most of them just mindlessly kbd without particular reasons. not to bait whiff, not to bait -15 moves to launch punish, nothing. even if they blocked -15 or lower moves they keep backdashing. I lost count how many players do 3 kbds, sidestep, yada yada, then after I pressure them a bit, do wr moves, they tried to contest or they froze, panicked.
and I've seen semi new players who still cant kbd, but they have better understanding about spacing and frame data. just 1 simple backdash and they can bait whiff and launch punish. they respect frames and moves range and property
ppl who mindlessly kbds are total poser

yeah KBD is one of the most basic and most important techniques in tekken. Even low ranked players usually have at least some level of kbd at their disposal. You don't really need to be that crisp with it though. Even slower kbd is still extremely useful.

You're scattered all over the place. First you said that people in low ranks are KBDing because they're actually smurfs. When I said that isn't the case you pivot to "yeah but they don't know when to be KBDing."

Your first comment was just wrong. You don't have to pivot and talk about something else to defend it.
The people who keep kbd even though there is no point of it are either a player who wants to flex (lol) or a keyboard warrior using macros (also lol :D).

A lot of times I just laugh at these players because they are dancing around with KBD and wavedash like a fool with the hope I whiff than got whiff punished themselves while I just using a few movement to bait them do mistakes. LOL

It really good at lower levels vs these pesky lows spammers (like when Law hit only 1 of your legs cuz you back-dash and you don't fall)

Didn't Aris say that beginners shouldn't worry about that since they are not yet at the level where it is needed?
