Maybe they want the guest characters feel at thome.
Or perhaps they don't want to add too many new stages because due to the
non-existent modes you'll never have the chance to see all the maps.
- Going to practice mode just to play a stage is pretty pathetic.
- Treasure mode repeats the same stage several times
- Arcade mode? You will have to play it 20 times a row...
For me that was the main point why I always loved Team Battle in the other Tekken games.
You're able to face a lot of characters and play on almost all maps pretty easy.
Competitive or not, a game should be made for different kind of players.
CSGo is very good example:
You want to play just for fun: Casual mode
You want some serious match: Competitive mode
Also, real Tekken competitions are offline - the guys sit next to each other.
Having serious matches in Tekken 7's Online mode?
I don't think so :p
Also I don't think anyone plays arcade mode especially lol. They botched that pretty badly x.x
Team Battle, Survival, Time Attack, Arcade and especially ghost mode were fun. I always liked how you could pick your next opponent using the dpad. Only thing is, even if they brought those modes back, they lobotomised the CPU or maybe they just had concussion or something. CPU in Tekken 7 is really bad, CPU's in any fighting game are never that good but Tekken 7's is painfully, hilariously bad XD
As you said, it adds variation to the game and doesn't make it look/feel static.
However, Tekken 7's missing modes is the problem.
Compare it to Tekken 4:
You had 19 characters 12 stages.
When playing an 8 vs 8 Team Battle, players will quickly notice the amount of players and stages isn't that high.
In Tekken 7 it's exactly the opposite:
Plenty of characters (more than needed if you ask me) and also more than 20 stages,
but no modes.
I agree that the CPU isn't a real opponent, but there still a lot of guys who simply want to play some rounds Tekken after coming back from work.
They choose 8 vs 8 Team Battle, press Start and have instant gaming.
No waiting for opponent, no Internet problems, no facing AFKs, no facing macro players, no facing lamers.
The other option is that they play with a real life friend.
Even though the majority might be interested only in Online playing,
I still believe more modes won't hurt.
Same goes to content like End videos for DLCs.
Sometimes I just open TTT's gallery and watch all the movies.
I don't think I'm the only one who does this ;)
I totally agree though, more content can't hurt. I feel like it's misleading to build up a playerbase on consoles that come to have expectations of what will be in a long running series (in terms of content) and just strip that out coz lol eSports.
Competitive Online players have plenty to cater to them (although I still thing there is stuff that could be done there too) but there is a disproportionate amount of content for Casual players O_o
