How to skip character intros and pause the game?

Guys, I know I'll look like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but I really don't understand how to pause the game or skip intros during local versus. I press every button on my stick or pad but nothing happens. I'm playing with two friends right now, and no one understand how to do these things. Is there a setting to activate or something?
