TEKKEN 7
New to Tekken, need help with Button Layout
Hey guys. I´m super new to tekken. Like i know nothing. Last time i played a tekken game was as a little child button smashing a psx..

I was thinking about my input device before anything else and (i hate xbox gamepads, they dont work for me) and i was thinking about buying a ps4 pad but then it made me think, i have a mechanical keyboard, key pressing is a lot faster and with more feedback than a gamepad and i can also use multiple fingers (and safe money)

so i tried to mimmik those big key button boxes thingys player use with numpad 4 8 2 6 for the attacks and i pulled out all the other numpad keys so i cant even hit anything else on accident an i have real feedback on where the 4 buttons are and...

is that any viable to begin with? because i allways thing "tech first" even if i just starting out i wanna start on a viable baseline without having to worry about input devices and settings and all that so i can purely focus on the rest once thats out of the way and i dont wanna relearn stuff halfway through either.

I've been using u i j k for attack buttons since first time playing this game.

For old times sake, go for the classic PlayStation controller.

Other than the directional keys you just need 4 buttons really. Just map those keys like how it's shown when you check a character's movelist. Try that first and see how it works for you. It's mostly preference. If you're gonna invest a lot of time into it though I'd say go for a pad or an arcade stick.
im asking because i thought keyboard might even better i guess? i mean on my keaboard i can have 3 fingers on my attack buttons and press them in any order however i want. On my xbox pad, i m not even sure how i should press 1 + 2 for example since its cross diagonal to how my thumb is on the pad having only 1 finger .

Then yes, if it's easier for you, just play the game with a keyboard.

Most of the folks I've seen use the "claw" for the inputs on pad. Some play normal and use the shoulders to bind combined buttons like "1 + 2." In the end it's gonna be what's easier for you.

Keyboard (assuming you have n-key-rollover) might be the single best input method for tekken. It trivializes the execution aspect of the game. The only downside is lack of portability and the need for a desk

You don't have to take my word for that though, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiJc3OE43C0

so i guess i m in a good spot then. But where do i start learning the game, even tho that has nothing to do with the question above. I m super overwhelmed by pretty much everything. Do combos and stuff like that even matter right at the start? or should i just play, get used to controls and how to block and having a few weeks with that auto combo thingy and once ive got used to the game, learn some combos.

Because i tried looking into combos for the character i picked. But to be honest, i cant even memorize the most basic combos. Like once i learned one, and try the next one i allready forgot the first one. And then i jump into some games and i try to focus to remember how a simply combo worked and i even forget to block because im too focused on that alone. I dont know. i feel like trying to memorize combos is like... learning some strategys and plays in football without even knowing the basic rules of football.
Combos are the easiest thing you can learn at the beginning since they are mostly static and never change and you will need them in any stage of play.
So just memorizing a staple for every launcher at the beginning is an easy way to get used to controlling your character and how it feels and is one of the only things in this game that will instantly give you positive feedback, since everything else you need to learn is more abstract.

In short, I personally highly recommend every beginner to just spend 15-30 hours practicing combos and playing against AI trying to apply them in matched to fully commit them to muscle memory before you start learning the other basics, since combos are so heavily integrated in the balance and risk/reward system of the game.

There are a lot of other basics you need to learn, but there is no short and correct answer to the order in which you should learn them or where to get your resources, I recommend looking up basic tutorials and joining a discord for your character where you can ask basic questions about the game if you are lost, most people will be happy to help.
Hi Nyandragon,

Sardine absolutely hit the nail on the head with their reply, there's little I can add that they haven't already mentioned - except perhaps if you're worried about your character choice. I looked at the currently active Steam threads for Tekken 7, and there's one called "why Jin is so underpowered???" and one called "mishima are scum". Try not to let that get to you too much, at all but the highest possible levels of play every character is usable, and most skills that you learn from one character will transfer over relatively easily to the others. Basics such as: how to stand up when your opponent hits you to the ground, what a whiff-punish is, how to move around a stage - all that stuff is very universal.

I guess what I'm trying to say is; if you pick a character that you really like - whether it be because they have a cool design, they have moves you find satisfying to land, or if you're one of those creepers who's way too fond of Xiaoyu's miniskirt options, then you're going to enjoy your time with the game a whole lot more than if you stress yourself about what's powerful or in vogue.

Its wonderful to see new blood coming into the game, wish you all the best!

i m kinda liking leo so far, and katarina is cool aswell. Alltho i might lean towards hwoarang simply because thats pretty much the character i allways played as a kid in t3 and stuff and it feels so nostalgic
