A good way to practice blocking?
New to Tekken and fighting games in general. I don't know any super complicated combos, but so far the reason I lose my games the most often is because I fail to block the beginning of a combo or low and up eating a lot of damage. Or just fold under pressure. Any ways to imrpove on my blocking skills, or do you think just playing player matches will help me improve it over time?

Not attacking (you could also practice punishing)

I'm far from being a pro, but something that have helped me is:

1.- Go to practice, put Action = CPU.

2.- In this mode, as Rabcor says, don't attack.
In fact, let go of the controller for a while. Tekken is one of the few series where you don't have to "proactively" defend. "Neutral" stops high and mid strikes, and "Down" (crouching) stops low strikes; no need to press "Back" in either case. Again, this works as long as you don't try to press "forward" or an attack button.

3.- After seeing you opponent (trying to) hit you for a while, try some fast pokes with your character. Pressing left punch once without direction works for most of them.

4.- When you feel comfortable with this, start to experiment. Increasing CPU difficulty is recommended.

Hope that helps.
Could try recording the AI to attack in practice mode and go at it.

You usually wanna block standing in this game, since that blocks Highs, Mediums, and Special Mediums. You only need to crouch block to block Lows (crouch block only blocks Lows though). Most damaging moves are High or Medium.
Thanks for the advice guys, I at first thought you had to hold back while standing or crouching for blocking to take place. I'd say I'm alright at punishing people, but struggle against people that are able to just continously lay on combos that it feels like I just can't find an opening. Do I try to land attacks in between their combos, or do I hold steady and try to block everything?

I think player matches against the same character multiple times would help but you would have to discipline yourself not to press things and you might lose a lot of games on your journey of improvement but the end result will be worth it I think.

But don't forget that its not just about hitting and blocking there is a 3rd element and its evasion, you can side step or backdash out of range of some things before they would even hit you then punish them after and some moves in this game dodge certain pokes.

also observing others fighting the same character
if you're going to block you have to hold back.

there are a couple of moves that punish you for not holding back while guarding.

E.G. kings 1+2, 1+2 and his d/b 3+4 4 4 4

make it a habit to hold back instead of being on neutral

That does sound rather important. I have the korean back dash thing down with the back back down. But when I try to side step sometimes, I only jump or crouch. Can you do it all distances,or can you only side step when closer to your opponent?

Ah, thanks for that. Do all characters have a set of moves that can only be blocked that way or only specific ones like King?

As for punishing, to really get into that you'll need to know the frame data of moves and only go on the offensive if you blocked a move that's punishable (has slower recovery than a move of yours starts up in).

I've actually been watching a lot of Aris/Avoiding the Puddle. He seems like a really rad guy that knows the game really well. I thought it was odd he wasn't mentioned more when people were looking for tutorials. Thanks for the vid :)
