Why is Akuma still being called Akuma and not Gouki?
I mean they say Gouki in the story mode and not Akuma.

Gouki is his real name. The translation calls him Akuma because that's what the localization is used to. In Japan, his name is actually Gouki and there is no mention of "Akuma" anywhere. Except maybe in his opening where he says "Wagana Akuma" or some ♥♥♥♥.

I know that and that's why I asked the question. It just seems weird on how it translated into that...

To a casual player who doesn't know much about Akuma. They'd wonder "Who the ♥♥♥♥ is Gouki? That's Akuma!"

That's why it translates to Akuma and not Gouki. The localization is just more familiar with Akuma.

Right, I get that but why name him Akuma from the get go? How does Gouki translate into Akuma to begin with? He has been a character in the game for a long time now

I had no idea he was called Gouki as I've never played much street fighter since.. forever.
He does seem to be one of the only kick ass looking characters from street fighter.

Gouki means Devil.
Akuma means Demon, monster or something along those lines.

I think they named him Gouki in the beginning but changed it later since "Devil" isn't really a popular name in a Christain country like America.

A safe way to not pi$$ed off other religious/cultures beliefs in Japan.

Uuhh that's wrong bro, you got it backwards..
Gouki means "Great Demon" in Japanese,

豪 (Gō=Great/Fine) + 鬼 (Oni=Demon) = 豪鬼 (Gouki=Great Demon)

meanwhile, Akuma means "Devil" in Japanese

悪 (Aku=Evil) + 魔 (Ma=Demon/Evil Spirit) = 悪魔 (Akuma=Devil)

The reason Capcom USA changed Gouki's name to Akuma was because they thought that "Gouki" didn't sound intimidating enough for english speaking audiences.. It had nothing to do with religion at all, because both names can be translated to have demonic meaning (Gouki = Great Demon, Akuma = Devil/Evil Demon).

Akuma is not the only one with a messed up name. M.Bison(dictator) real name is Vega, Vega(cage fighter) real name is Balrog and Balrog(Boxer) name is M. Bison.

Guess they didn't want to piss off Mike Tyson and thats the reason it was changed. No idea why they decided to change Gouki to Akuma tho.
