In the DA40 you need to use the dials on the left of the G1000, not the ones of the AP.

They don't work when I press them!!! The plane don't follow the nav only thing I can seem to get it to do is hold heading and altitude.

You should be able to switch to CDI mode on the left display (PFD)
use the center button below the CDI label (you'll have normally to click twice) then the centering line (NAV direction) would become magenta and displaying GPS

Yeah it is that colour. But when you turn nav on it doesn't do anything. I think I must be doin something wrong. As I've got the others to work I need to use the scroll wheel to adjust altitude and head. When I turn nav on should it follow the purple line yes?

Here's the steps i've done at the moment, in a simple way

  • go free flight
  • set a flight plan
  • start flight
  • wait autopilot to initialize
  • click twice on CDI button on PFD left display
  • take off
  • click NAV button and AP button on autopilot
  • if NAV heading is not aligned with runway and with with a wide angle, the plane will have at first a heading about 30 degrees compared to NAV heading, to slowly adjust to NAV heading and then it will follow NAV heading
  • on autopilot click ALT button, set altitude with mouse scroll wheel then click ARM button

Enjoy navigation and flying

What does the [CDI] button do. I use the Auto-Pilot all the time with the G-1000 but never pressed the [CDI].

My only problem is, I sometimes forget to turn [HDG] & [Alt] on before I adjust them. When I forget, they just reset and I just change them again.

The CDI button on GPS switches between VOR or GPS inputs.

I'm working on video guides for autopilot for each aircraft to complement flight3lfsim's excellent guides. His guides are more immersive. Mine will include keyboard shortcuts. Only have the PA28 done for now.

Thank you.

DA40/DA42 Autopilot guide. I know, GPS is limited. You have to have a flight plan, because the cursors are so screwed up you can't really enter locations for now. But if you do have a flight plan, this covers the NAV function, including using GPS to line up on runways if the airport has the capability.

Odd, whether in FSX(SE) or FSW, I always use the "ALT" & "HDG" knobs on the G-1000 display. I've never used the NAV or CDI feature so that's something I may try.

In FSW, my aircraft of choice is the DA-42, in FSX, I prefer the Beechcraft Baron 58.
