Sometimes this game isn't very fun...
I love racing games, but some aspects of this game leave a bad taste in my mouth...

1) The fact most of the racing is impeded by cars blocking you and not actually racing. Many cars seem to race just to impede your progress and not to actually race.

2) The stupid blue collectibles. You can be forced to race tracks you placed 3rd or 2nd on simply because you didn't collect enough junk. You can find yourself needing more points to progress and have to replay tracks that were annoying enough to play once.

3) You're not racing, your collecting junk. Not only do you have to get the best rank, but you have to drive over specific areas of the road to make progress. You can't just race to win, but you'll run out of fuel or just not get enough points by trying to win by position.

I'm not saying the game is terrible, it is fun, but it doesn't feel like a racing game as Super Hang on, Outrun, or other racers I like do.

Maybe I'll take a break playing it for a while and see if I feel differently down the line. When I get as frustrated playing a game as I am this one, I give myself a time out and play other games. I even have games I consider "cool down games" I play to relax.

Totally agree with everything!
I've been replaying the game since yestarday trying to get back to where I was before the game decided to delete my save and TBH stopped playing yestarday and today 'cause I had to rage quit because I was tired of being blocked and replaying races 'cause I missed a few blue craps behind.
I've got to the point of restarting a good run on the final lap just because I've missed the blue craps.
It's really annoying!

Yeah though it was interesting at the start it quickly became droll and lifeless. I'll go back to Burnout Paradise because at least you get satisfaction when knocking someone off the track.

Yeah, point 1 is especially annoying. Sometimes you're trying to catch up the 1st in place and one random driver with no chance of winning the race is there just to get in the way, often bumping into you with the result you not only don't get 1st place, but drop to 3rd...

This game is definitely a spiritual sucessor of the Lotus games, but Lotus had none of this stuff, no blue tokens, no bouncing cars. Sometimes it's easier to win a race than to collect all of the blue tokens. The only problem is they take away your focus from racing. I played the Lotus games so much back in the day, and I would love to see normal colisions that just slow you down and not like cars are made out of rubber.

I think it was inspired by Top Gear as they are a Brazilian studio and people usually love Top Gear over here, dang they even have the same music!
I dunno if Top Gear had these same mechanics or not 'cause I haven't played it back then.

This game I never heard of, but it looks exactly like Lotus, and the first Lotus (Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge) came out in 1990, Top gear came out in 1992. However Outrun looked also like Lotus, and came out in 1986...

I just found on playstation.com it says for Horizon Chase Turbo: "Thrilling arcade racing game, inspired by Outrun, Top Gear, Lotus Turbo Challenge and the whole generation of super-fun-straight-to-the-point racing games." So we can be all happy now :D

Outrun I think it's different! Outrun reminds more of Hang On with that kind of "infinite" racing track limited by the time.

But yeah LOL they were inspired by it all!

Outrun isn't limited. There are multiple endings based on the courses you choose at the end of each segment. Hang On and Super Hang on have finite courses as well.

Yeah I know but it's not limited by laps, it's limited by the time.
If you suck and don't get time extenders (reach the checkpoint before the timer runs out) you'll never finish the race.
While on lap based games you usually can finish last but can technically reach the end at least of the track LOL

I will never forget, when you run out of time in OutRun your blonde girlfriend is mad at you pointing and arguing with you lol.

LOL I bet she would shout "See I told you we should have asked for directions! You don't know the way!"

I do like the blue coins
Also they make couch co-op racing more fun
but that's my taste, you guys sure have the right to disagree :D

i used to play outrun when i was a kid.
I thought this game was inspired on Outrun, but now i see there was so many games like it!

This game is based on the old Top Gear games mostly. In the Top Gear games you DO collect some stuff throughout the course, like extra Nos or money pickups (in Top Gear 2). The only things they added were the fuel pickups (which you had to refill by going to pitstops in top gear 1) and the coins (which are new).

And yes in the old top gear games part of the difficulty was not crashing into other racers and some of them do block your way on higher difficulties.

I don't think its bad at all. You need to realize, the game would be too easy and boring if all you did was just race on empty roads with easy AI that lets you pass them like nothing. It adds an extra layer of strategy and challenge.

I generally agree, yet I do think that AI could use some situational awareness.

It's painfully obvious that current AIs are simply programmed to float toward your car no matter what. Plus, there is no apparent repercussion for AI cars from collision.

So if you are caught between an AI car and the roadside, it will unquestionably Vettel squeeze you to crash. And if you are caught between two AI cars, you will be bumped around like a pinball and lose speed while AI cars drive away like nothing happened.

These situations can be easy worked around for sure, yet it doesn't make them any less silly.
