There are some elements over which I think the originals are better. For instance, the original 'Bullet Dance' bass intro is far more interesting than the mellow guitar in the remix, but the double-pedal assault after said guitar intro more than makes up for it.
The original 'Childish Killer' started off with a really cool harmonised guitar line, I wish they kept that in the remix.
'Condemnation Wings' in general is a very very solid slab of power metal, it's really hard to improve on it. The remix in general improved on the sound quality by far, though the symphonic intro on the original was quite cool to be honest. The acoustic section is a nice touch - the rhythm section still maintains that same degree of tightness, so it's more of a nice touch than an outright detraction.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the changes to 'Alexandrite' and 'Marionette Purple'. The remixes are definitely far more metal. 'Alexandrite' is very catchy, but its usage of a very artificial drum sound in the original hampers it. The remix of 'Marionette Purple' benefited greatly from organ additions, giving it the feel of many of the 70s hard/progressive rock classics. The new riff seems heavily influenced by the Hendrix classic 'Foxy Lady', so it definitely rocks out a lot more now.
'Oriental Flower' had a very nice harmonised lead going on in the chorus. Unfortunately, we lost that with the remix (it's just a single lead guitar playing the chorus). However, we get a very heavy and bad-ass thrashy section in the intro to make up for it.
The brass-heavy intro to the remix for 'Gale' is majestic, and largely reminiscent of stuff like Freedom Call or Power Quest. Always a good thing.
I'm not sure how I feel about the new 'Sword Of Doom'. It's become much heavier, though the original had a few things going for it that helped make it a very solid track: 1.) the vocals were choral and not so up front in the mix, which fit it better in my opinion, 2.) the thrashy section with a lot of snare in it shortly after the chorus is desperate and excellent in equal measure, 3.) the majestic string+power chord part just after the solo was a great way to wrap up that section. That said, the remix is still really solid, so I guess these are minor issues for me.
I think you get the general idea. I largely prefer the remixes by far. The improved sound quality, and the little tweaks to the original tracks make most of them so much more enjoyable to listen to.
Metal is my favourite genre so I'm definitely in favour of the heavier sound and greater emphasis on guitars. Your mileage may vary.
I can go from a sad song to blaring guitars with midi trumpets blaring in seconds.
Also while the quality of the songs are higher (in terms of actual audio quality) the intros last far too long.
also the intros are too long. except for Thin RED Line II where they get rid of the intro instead, and i just feel like it starts too unnaturaly.
alexandrite II is actually really good tho ill give it that
