I played tower of the sorcerer as well. I was very bad at it, because I was too young, but my brother told me that, unlike Dungeon Up, that game had almost only one correct path, and everything else would lead you to get stuck (usually not enough keys) at some point later on.
The procedurally generated levels can be annoying sometimes, but they make the game what it is. Also the level editor is there, just not enough people making levels. There is a map attempting to recreate tower of the sorcerer in this game's engine, not sure how accurately.
like you said, almost, you are allowed a very decent amount of mistakes in case you don't know all the secrets. For example it's easy very easy to not use the elixir.
I couldn't read most of what wisemen said because for some compatiblity reasons the text was withe in dialogue boxes. So the first time I finished it, I remember, I didn't knew there was a cross, I always left the room it was in, 19 floor, still remember it, because I hadn't realize what was inside it, so I spend all my coins on altar of this level and used the elixir to defeat the vampire, good thing is I could 1 shot rocks and big bats early, so it was easier to access other powers ups without too mcuh damage and to farm for cash, except for zombies, still I managed to hoard enough life to kill the vampire boss without the cross.
Then eventually I found it completly randomly on another run, when coming back to level 2 to grab coins, I rushed into the wall, and boom, it blew my mind lol, good times.
I'm currently playing the workshop, and the devilz tower is pretty fun, lots of trials and errors, but it has what is lacking in the main story, that consistancy, nothing random.
I played the remake also, but for some reason when I get the red staff, it's bugged, I can jump to any level, including unvisited ones, that breaks eveything. I've seen up to the 2nd boss, and so far it's 100% the same, same values, same locations, sames items, I saw no difference except the tilesets/charsets/ music and the dialogue is a bit updated.
As for TotS, I do feel like this game is a bit more casual than its inspiration. At least bad runs still gives soulstones which can be used in a better run. It's also more fun to play the maze mode for quickies, I play that a lot more now, since I think I can knack the normal quest. Mouse clicking is so much more convienient than TotS with its keyboard movement. And the text is more readable than white on gray.
And TotS definitely is much harder than this one. I don't know if I can complete it now I've finished this game (even if I can find a walkthrough) but that's probably because I'm not sure if I want to play TotS without mouse clicking.
As for the level editor... I feel like it's a mess. It looks easy at first but then you have to add events... The editor is not good at that.
The soul stones can buy some useful items, such as the Scroll of resummoning all the monsters. Use it in Zone 4 is best choice (you can collect money without being hurt, unlike Imp). Then you can use the money to upgrade. Or if you have high attack and defense, you just need a Holy Water to boost up your health. Then you can strike the boss without exhausting your life and time.
Of course, you should beat small bosses to get the soul stones. But that would be much easier.
