When you listen at the door you HAVE to wait a minimum of 3-4 seconds. After the 3-4 seconds THEN you will hear something. Like Scott said FNaF 4 is more of a game of patience then the previous games.
When you think of a breathing sound, think of someone breathing into a microphone.
If you still can't really tell, when you open a door, listen for something abnormal.
You may hear some glass being hit against something, that means an animatronic is in the kitchen. If you hear some running, they can either be running in the house or getting closer to the hallway.
But once you open the door and hear anything abnormal(such as a single pounding noise), it might mean they're at the door.
I used this technique and so far I'm at Night 3.
