Photoshop - Editing, Hues, Etc
At least I believe he uses Photoshop. I know for a fact he said he uses 3ds max for models, that includes the map.
If you want something cheaper, try Cinema 4d, or Blender is free and also good. ^_^
Once again, not sure if he used Photoshop for the games, but I know he used them for the teasers. :)
And I've personally not used 3dsMax or Maya, I'm more of a Cinema 4d person, simple, but gets the job done.
