This seems to be the rage right now when it comes to base defense.
used the area right outside the front gate for the farm, 10x10, and built fortress walls around it. saw blades on sides powered by controllers and a massive masher on the front gate with piston doors to get vehicles in and out.
During a raid, I stand over the front masher with a small fort to duck into for tapebots. they see me, and run right into the masher. saws on sides just keep them funneled to the front masher.
I have never lost a single block.

plant as many Blueberries, Broccoli, Banana etc you want in there. And you're done.
Robots may spawn one or two inside the maze, but they aren't smart to find the way to the crops area, they will not fight back too except for Haybots (though it lose interest pretty quick).
Here's our another base Farm :

The metals surround are items we steal at the Warehouse, it has high durability. The platform is not that high, you can jump over, but the robots couldn't. You can simply kill them using melee weapon while standing on the platform without taking any damage.
We have a runway overhanging a concrete wall on which are sawblades just hanging. When bots income they go for the wall and back off because of the saws. The Runway has a gap in the floor which isn't big enough for us to fall down neither can we crouch under the railing. So we cann hit the bots from above without being hit by them. But your wall needs to be 8-9 blocks high.
Now:
Metal Block 3 and spuds for Haybots, melee carnage for totebots.
planting within the space between them seals your sides which will focus the enemy on the front and back, as long as you setup some crowd control later on when you start planting more and more it will be a very solid foundation spot :)
