You can eventually use sensors to let the drill rotate only when something's detected next to it and put off the engine the rest of the time. Just a bit of logic and you spare much fuel...
It doesn't take much time. At first, I put the drill and the wheels on the same engine each time I wanted to break stone (at least the first breaking, after you can finish it manually), and fuel is easily looted early in the game.
But ok, it's a good idea if you enjoy it.
