Scrap Mechanic

Scrap Mechanic

Public (dedicated) Server
Scrap Mechanic is a really cool game.
I always enjoy playing it with my friends, but unfortunately far too rarely. One of the reasons is that only one of us owns the world we play on together. If this person is not present on a day, Scrap Mechanic is cancelled for all other participants as well.
I would love to run Scrap Mechanic on a public server. At best on Linux to save performance.

What do you think about this?
Yes, I want a server!

Just a dedicated server is half the issue solved. They need to fully rework the idiotic peer-to-peer multiplayer, because that's the bigger issue. It sucks ass, and unless they have a better game engine (they don't), a better team that knows more than stupid lua and some c++ here and there (they don't), and a way to optimize the peer-to-peer connection and what it transfers from one person to another (barely any network optimization), it's still going to be bad.

I do not believe the developers will do anything about it, and Scrap Mechanic will remain one of the games with potential, but will remain in a half-assed state with thousands of bugs that haven't been fixed to this day.

They're doing a really good job I think. Maybe they only know some LUA and C++. But for that, it's really good. A Server would solve my problem. P2P wouldn't work with a server. Because P2P means the computers are communicating with each others without a server.

So Alex, if you can do it better, do it.
But if not, you shouldn't say they're using bad languages.

For me its a really good work. And it will be better some day.
Sometimes it's good to be a little more optimistic.

How long have you owned the game? Did you play a lot of multiplayer? I did, and it's terrible, even on gigabit, especially when you play with someone across the ocean, in say, USA. I'm pretty sure I know more about the game and its inner workings than you do, considering I've known it for almost 6 years and owned it on Steam for almost 3 years. Also, you just THINK they're doing a really good job. They aren't, in my eyes. They never fixed the multiplayer, they haven't even bothered to admit that mp is absolute dumpster fire.

The game can't connect to a server, because the multiplayer system is strictly P2P. They HAVE to rework the entire multiplayer system, not just the P2P part, since there are things that should be reworked, and then be added as a Tool for Steam users who might want to host their own servers. It is not as easy as you think.

I'm not going to help this game, I have my own projects in far better game engines than this trash. The developers are inept for anything, from how long it took to bring us any updates on the game. And they aren't using bad languages, I never said that. By this I meant they SUCK at LUA and C++, and you need more than that to run a server.

I have been optimistic enough with this game. I'm done with it, for the most part and moved on.

first issue - multiplayer bad
second issue - game crashing objects
third issue - money

They have more than enough money from SM's sales. Up until now, they made about $7-8 million, just from SM.

That money solved but what about how badly a dedicated server will run considering how bad the multiplier is already.

I don't get why people keep asking for it the last thing we need right now is dedicated servers. If you think multiplayer runs poorly now a dedicated server would only amplify the problems. Not to mention how easy it is to crash the game server side.

Edit: Just to clarify I don't think it is necessarily a bad idea on it's own (public servers would be a nightmare but private would be ok) It's just that too many things need to be fixed or changed for it to be plausible

Why is everyone thinking about dedicated servers?
P2P is enough. Just add in-game list of public games (Like in Deep Rock Galactic or Human Fall Flat) I think it is simple enough and there is no need to rewrite the multiplayer code.
