How do you unpack the potatoes?

I'm kinda annoyed that the potato plant grows into a crate of potatoes that you can't eat... but I assume there's a reason for it I just haven't found yet. But is there any way to unpack them so you can actually eat them?

My friend and I started a co-op game and we've only been able to survive by feeding cows a ton of corn to just get milk.

Potatoes are purely for ammunition so don't grow them to eat. Grow radishes is my suggestion since they are one of the best foods for getting hunger back.

Potatoes are used as ammo for spudgun and are not consumable.
